Thinking of buying an MTX, however, I do a lot of flatland riding. What's the average top speed of an MTX say on a groomed railbed? The short tracks in my area are hitting about 100 on speedo. I heard MTX will only do about 75 on speedo. Can anybody shed any light on this subject? Also, how's the fuel mileage riding on flatland? Would it be as good as a Vector Mountain? Thanks!

85 is what the speedo says on mine set up for 4,000 - 6,500 feet above sea level. Can't remember what the gearing is for that, or the rivets in the primary, but that is what mine is set at.

I grew up in NH and can't imagine owning one of these MTX's for VT, NH, ME, Quebec use. They are great mountain sleds, but the short track RTX is going to be so much better on trails. Just my opinion.

If you are riding fast trails on an MTX you are not going to see the mileage the shorty's are getting.

As a side note, my wifes phazer mountain lite (2007) set up for the same elevation will out top end my FXNytro MTX.......... Well on the speedo it shows 87. Now head to head, that may be different, but I haven't raced my wife.

Check the link below. You need to get one of these. Nytro fx stretched to 144 with a 1.75. With some extra wheels to keep the hyfax alive I'm still hitting 100 MPH ( speedo) on the hardpack and gas milage really hasn't changed. You still have the good suspension and shocks with wide front end for the trails. This sled is a riot to drive.

Good point, the MTX has the narrow ski stance for ease of side hilling and boondocking. I have a 2007 Phazer FX that was longtracked and has the wider front end. My wife likes that stability. The MTX's are a little "tippy" on trail due to that narrower front end.

I agree, buy a shorty and make it a 136 or 144...............OR WAIT TO SEE IF YAMAHA DOES THAT FOR YOU ON FRIDAY NIGHT!!!!

Trail at about 1200' elevation and gauge said it topped out at 148km/h. Keepin mind its a mountain sled. That was with stock gearing and Yammi's reccommended clutching for that elevation.

i believe i got my sled up to 89, it was awhile ago but i think thats what i hit... in my area we are lacking in the snow dept so cant confirm the top speed on mine, if we ever get more snow i will let you know.

On my GPS my NYTRO MTX will run 98 mph. On the speedometer it reads 102 mph. This is totally STOCK. It runs around 9300 rpm. I tried a 43 degree helix and 110 degrees of spring and it held the rpm perfect at 8900, definately faster acceleration, no change in top end other than a lower rpm.

Mr. Freeze,

There is no way an MTX with stock gearing will do 98 mph. If you have the gearing that came in the sled from the factory, you are set for 8,000-10,000 feet and geared pretty low. NO WAY would it go 98 mph. Even with setting it up for 4,000 - 6,500 and changing out the top gear and chain, it will not go 98 mph.

Freeze has the whole sea level setup on his sled, 2 teeth taller on the top sprocket than the high elev I believe and I think his track has been trimmed to 1.75 but not sure on that.

I don't understand why he says "stock" then. :dunno:

Agreed, that isn't stock is it?

Steve

Sorry about that, my fault. Aside from the low elevation factory gearing/clutching the sled is stock. Now the track is cut to 1.75", it ran 98 on GPS before cutting, and has no problem doing so now. Oversight on my part, just drove the sled the way I picked it up, so I take it for stock.
