What was the trick to re-programing the Hand warmers?

Sorry, I can't help you on that one. Some said they had just left them to be off all the time? I have the same question you do and as soon as that not so lazy bastard gets the sweat out his eyes, gets a shower and a cold beer maybe he can help us out. Powder Blue

PB,

A little clarification....... I have mine adjusted so that when I start my sled it turns the handwarmers down all the way. I think I have it set for about 12 seconds of "turn down" time. The handwarmers still function exactly as they did before. Once the switch is done doing the initial turn down everything goes back to being controlled by the blue rockers on the handle bars. This way if it is a little cold out I can simply turn them back up a few bars after the switch is done doing its thing.

The only time you lose control is during that first few seconds while the switch is turning down the warmers.

All of this is why I stress DO NOT cut the wires simply splice in to them. That way everything still works as before.

LB is correct that if you are going to have the switch only do a partial turnb down it might be easier to set the switch to the 10 second setting. Mine is on one minute just to insure they have plenty of time to get turned down. You use the dial to adjust how many seconds the down button is held down.

One oddity that you may notice.............. If you turn the warmers down all the way using either LB and I's method or even manually with the blue buttons, then let the display go back to the fuel gauge, then press down again you will notice the first indicator lights up for a second then disapears. At first I thought this meant that my warmers were still turned on by one bar, but that is not true. They are all the way off, it is just an oddity with the display when you hit the down button. Just something that caused me to do testing that I am trying to save all of you.

Hopes this helps!!

One last thing.... LB, here is the Stanley trip: http://www.rx1.info/viewtopic.php?t=282

Thanks Spray, that is definately a "Printworthy post". The RX-1 list just goes on and on. That's ok I guess. I will just need to prioritize my purchases.
The one thing I really don't get is how you would splice into the existing wire without either using a piggyback system like your illegal blue auto connectors? I guess you could peel off the insulation in an area and solder the wire you needed to the exposed area? owder B

PB no J,

You are correct with both metods. LB is a bit of a purist so for him it is peel and solder. I'm lazier. How can that be? lol I haved no problems with the illegal blue connectors. As a matter of fact I think the blue ones make you go faster!!

With my way, you DO cut the wires, but after you cut them, you connect them back up.

This is how you do it....

CUT the wire you want to splice into, slip a heat-shrink tube over one of them, STRIP the 2 ends of the wire you cut AND the end of the NEW wire you're adding, then solder ALL THREE wires back together. After all three wires are connected, slip the tube over the joint and heat with a small flame to shrink until glue oozes out.

A nasty thing that I experienced with my last sled... handle bar warmers with poor wire connections. I ended up having a working LEFT, and a right that only worked on LOW when the switch was set to HIGH. If you follow procedure with solder and heat-shrink tubing, you will not have this problem. Remember that the location where this will be put will sometimes get WET, so its a lot nicer to keep everything nice and tight.

Thanks guys, now I understand how you do it. Great! So all you do is splice this timer into the loop, set it where you'd like and tie it down with a wire tie? Is it really that easy? Powder Blue

It really is that easy. After you splice it in and then zip it to the handlebars under your pad. No one will have a clue it is there.

I might be up to that ride, but you'll have to refresh me of the dates. I started a new job and have been doing a lot of studying for licenses I need, haven't been on here all that much. Spray, I need to talk to you about NOS. Email me at treewhacker@hotmail.com

Good idea! I printed a picture of where (I'm sorry I honestly can't remember who did it originally) the water temperature sending unit is mounted. I'm headed to Lowes today to buy the 1/2" T needed. Having a picture to look at really does simplify the process. Maybe that's why Playboy is so popular? Powder Blue
