What would you do if your sled was constantly in the shop?

Trading for what?

I would also know what you think I should trade for?

Could you tell me how many miles you have on your Apex?

I'm almost at the 12k miles marks. I just reloaded my monoshock. First time ever I'm reloading shock. I consider myself a hard rider, but never (almost) abuse the sled. I did welded the W a few times, same as my XCR and Storm in the past.

About that new ZX2 suspension? Sound interresting and not that expensive.

Don't give up just yet!

Good luck

Yummy, I can't comments on mdkuni's trail conditions, but the few times I've been in the Rouyn area, the trails are fast and smooth. Hard to wreck a suspension up there! ;)!

Not So! The worst trail in my area are Rouyn-Noranda! They hardly pass the TrailMaker and the terrain in full of Rock, River, Hole and mountains.
But, the best trail in the world are AMOS, takes me about 1 hour of riding to get on Amos's trails and it's worthty.

If you come around in this part of the country, let me know. Will be my pleasure to ride with you.

Yummy.

Carefull if you revalve the monoshock and you're already breaking pivot arms. The stiffer the shock and spring is, the faster the pivot (w) arms fail (in our experience).

If you leave the suspension soft and prone to bottoming, other than eventually bending the rails at the very front idlers (from hammering on the front pivot arm when bottoming very hard), the monoshock seems to hold together the best in stock form.

Yes I know and that make lots of senses. I usually run the EC at 2/3 lines on the clutter. Also, I inspect the suspension for cracks and check all wheels/bearings very often (200-300 miles).

Yummy

ZX2 on its way! If we have snow, you will get a full durability report if I don't break something else.

I'm looking forward to hearing how it works out.

I'm not sure I'd personally go for a ZX2 just yet, but I have heard great things about how well they work (as long as you loctite the bolts...).

So far I haven't heard of any true failures either - other than the bolts that aren't loctited backing out.

I wonder how the ZX2 will hold up over the next 9000 miles...

You and me both! It seems Ad Boivin claims it is more durable then anything they built. It looks like MANY years of development too. I am guessing I will find out real quick if it works or not.

I will be sure to let you know, especially because of our similar riding styles.

Really? I crossed over to QC a couple times when riding from Kirkland Lake...a lot of the trails we were on were straight and fast!!! It was a few years ago since we were there last, and I'm not sure we made it all the way to Rouyn. I'll keep the offer in mind...thanks!

With the amount of miles you ride I would buy a sled every year or every other year.

I agree 100% ...

Thats a ton of miles.. it doesnt matter what sled you ride, you will have to replace belts, carbides, tracks, bearings, studs, etc etc every 3000 miles or less depending on how you ride and the conditons you ride in..

My buddy rides 4-5000 miles a year and completely rebuilds his ZR900 from the ground up, new bearings, boggies, track, slides, bushing, pistons and jugs etc EVERY YEAR..

Its called normal wear and tear..

THe thing that sets the fourstroke apart from the rest, is the engine will probobly last over 20,000 miles if we are luck, where the rest will need to be rebuilt every 4000 miles..

I just don't understand this. I really feel if all you guys rode high miles and were in my situation you would be upset.

Belts, tracks, bearings, carbides, and hyfax are normal wear and tear!

Exhaust every 2,000-3,000 miles is not!
Suspension failure every 1,000-2,000 miles is not!

Can you honestly tell me it is not?

Those are the main issues. I had a 02 Viper to prove it is not, and still have a 98 VMAX with over 11,000 miles that will prove it as well.

A new skid will hopefully take care of 50% of the issue. The exhaust I can handle as long as Yamaha will continue to cover it.

Ive got 5520 miles on my sled and havent touched the exhuast..

Never had any part fail, I might have broken the part during riding, or drove the the sled in Snirt which cause parts to wear alot faster than normal, but the part never failed..

I had to replace several slides, all the track clips, all the suspension bushings (not that you shouldnt) and changed the oil and chain case oil but this is normal wear an tear.. I even have to change out my oil tank because it has it crack in it,, (im sure the jumping has something to do with that)

I must agree that yamaha should have done a better job on the mono shock (valving to weak and the seal always leaked) but after having the UPDATED seal from ohliens installed, it hasnt blow or faded yet..

Just be happy you dont have a blow motor, or a computer problem that just wont go away...

all sleds WEAR out..

I am very surprised to hear you have had no exhaust issues yet.

Bottom line, this sled in working form is better then anything I have rode. If it wasn't there would not be 9,800 + miles on it. I just hope the new skid works.

I am very happy to not have a blown motor. I have a motor that runs as strong or stronger then the first day I rode it.

Hopefully someone will develop a solution to the exhaust problem for the rest of us that are having the issue.

Sorry to say, :o| but You will have the exhuast problem. Mine started around 6k miles.

I hope this problem is resolve on the 2009 models!

Good day!

Mine is has a very small tick when first starting the sled at idle.. Im sure this is whats happening with mine too..

Every sled takes maintance to keep the going.. I doubt they will change the design for this problem.. something has to wear..

Not that I like it, but they all have their issues. But the Yamaha has the least IMO. Ridden them all. I rode the new XP 2 weekends ago. What a ball of plastic. Had Cat's, need I say anything there? Poo's were all right except for my 650, blown motor no riding for weeks.
We take these sleds to the hardest enviorement in the world, beat the #*$&@ out of them and then wonder why they fail.LOL
My sled had idler issues, solved, handwarmers, solved, slide wear, solved, mono problems solved, steering darting, solved, a-arm wear, solved, and all because of the guys on this site! But far better than engine failure or chassis failure like the rest. Just my 2 cents.

But there again I like to wrench in my shop, keeps me away from the honey do list. LOL
