What's the big deal with monoshock-rant

I must admit I am really surprised at how little respect the mono shock gets and all those who switch out suspensions for something better ( or so perceived). Yeah initially there were some strength issues for heavier riders but over the years it has come a long way. For me its just was a matter of being sprung correctly, gusseting and correct valving. But so what. I have an 05 with close to 12,000 hard driven miles, and I', 6'4 278lbs. I ride with an ex snow crosser who's on his on his fourth Doo XP since I bough mine. Moguls or no moguls 'Bigblue' gets pushed every time. I am absolutely convinced that if I had pushed all the others that way, there would have been major breakage and engine failures. So its no coincidence that OSM found the Apex an overall best sled in their real world comparison and that Supertrax has on many occasions referenced the virtues of the mono shock. So for all the little weenies out there that have issues with it....spend a little coin. set up your suspension correctly, and just ride.

I hear you on the mono skid. My wifes attack rides nice since I had her shock rebuilt and revalved. I was going to switch my pro action on my 03 rx1 to the mono skid until I came across a killer deal on a ZX2 suspenssion.

Ya know it's funny, I could easily make a carbon copy of your post and replace mono shock with pro-action.. call me crazy all u want. I ran a 03' edge from brand hammer new,.rite up to 2 winters ago, now..an 05' warrior, and I like the pro action. Along side of tyre track thumping from time to time, which it doesnt seem to hurt anything .... I'm 5'10 and 175lbs and it's not far off from the m10 that was in my poo.

Really, My pro action skid is so hard. I have drove several brand sleds with different skids and most of them are better than my pro action, even my kids 98 indy trail. I have tried everything with it and finaly decided to replace it.

I found that there is a huge difference between the 06 mono and the 2011 version. I have grown to like the mono.

I guess ones defintion of 'hard riding' is subjective. I do love the idea of the mono shock being a single shock an all. I think it can be made to handle good and ride nice with decent durability. However a performance suspension it is NOT. After you ride a ZX2/expert x, etc it will make sense.

Agreed, at 6"1" and 285, I pulled my mono shock and sent it to Pioneer Performance BEFORE assembling sled from crate. Installed Big boy spring and they re-valved it.

Just rode it and swapped sleds with an 2011 Apex XTX a few times over the last week. The mono was better at not bottoming out, softer overall ride quality. The 2007 was also quicker AND had a higher top speed.

I always send my shocks out for a re-valve, & have found that to be the biggest improvement on any sled or motorcycle I can make for ride and handling and longevity.

I have a 2000 Vmax with a proaction skid which amazes everyone who rides it. Same results.

i have one in my 05 i have spent enough money on it beef up kit hygear twisted spring wheels all the time need changing , and yes all wheels get greased along with suspension , now at this time transfer rod is all bent screwed up center of track , more money needs to be spent on yamahas great suspension , i might just put in a different suspension now , just can,t keep the mono together one you fix one thing another one breaks.
i am 6-2 230 pounds i am tired of it.......

I agree. The 136 pro-action works well at 136.

will be pulling the pro action out of the rx1 this spring and debating on going with a mono...I do tend to push the sled to it's limit on the rough trails with a mono survive this even with a halfbaked front arm???

08 and later the mono was beefed up and pretty dependable from the factory.You would be fine if you could find a take-off on a later model.

My mono skid is an 08 with beef up. Three hard seasons....no issues. I would update the wheels to ones with replaceable bearings also.....also two rough seasons no issues.
