Who the hell wants a 80 hp sled

OK, why does it seem Yamaha riders are the most defensive? Unless you 100% praise this sled, you get called a basher or whatever.

For it's niche, it does fill the void in the Yamaha lineup, but I still have a hard time considering any vehicle with a MSRP of $6399-7199 to be considered 'entry level'. Heck, couple years ago you could get a top line 135hp sled that retailed only slightly over $7000 USD....

For me, I just keep waiting for Yamaha to really nail it, they have the technology and the ability, yet still keep coming up a bit short. Don't just give us something different, go way beyond the box.

I guess the looks fit the generation that actually thinks Civics and Neons are fast cars. But it sure does seem they simply wacked the entire front end off the sled! However, I wouldn't pre-judge any sled on looks alone.

Trying to par it down is a great concept. But in the end, it really isn't that light, with claimed dry weights on the mountain 'lite' at almost 500 lbs. The integrated chaincase/bulkhead/frame combo looks good on paper, but I'm wondering what happens when you munch a chaincase bearing and now you have to replace a freakin' bulkhead instead of an easy and cheap to replace chaincase housing? Trick gauge package is cool, but will it survive a simple roll-over? How well will it float with no front belly pan area to speak of? Those a-arms hanging out in the breeze sure seem to say "hey trees, latch on here". With only 8 gallons of fuel, range will be limited even if it gets outstanding mileage.

Regardless, I still give Yamaha a lot of credit. They continue to push the envelope of the sledding industry and think beyond the box. I just believe they can do even more.

For '08, how about giving us the exact same FX sled, longer track options, purpose built 3 cylinder 4-stroke with a legit 135ish HP, dry weight under 500 lbs, and keep the MSRP price at $8199 or less. Now that would be industry shaking and truly worth considering.... ;)!
 
Ya they have diffeerent sizes in windsheild and they also say it can be popped off real easy once you have gotten to where you want to be. Keep the windsheild on going up trail to get to mtns then pop her off at gas drop and go play. then when all wet and cold at end of day pop it back on for trail ride back down. Some days on way back from hard day in mtns I wish I had a winsheild to duck behind.

ABSOLUTELY .......And were they not only about 45hp back then to boot :D
 
Who want's Phazer??

Turbo on it would be great!!
I had lots of calls from guys asking if I was going to make turbo kit for it and how much HP
15 lbs boost should be close to 160HP
10 lbs boost pump gas 130HP
Pretty good guess and at altitude 130hp still going to beat up a lot of 2 strokers.

I can't wait to tear one apart and check it out for myself.
 
will at 10,000 ft. 80hp-30%=56hp+10lbs boost 50 hp=106hp at 10,000ft. a naturally aspirated 150hp 2stroke will be making 105hp at 10,000ft now if we can get 15lb boost now we are at 136hp at 10,000ft and it takes 195hp naturally aspirated to make 136hp at 10,000ft. this might be fun to woop up on all the 800-900cc 2 strokes with a phazer.
 
Count me in on one, I want to re-enter sledding at the entry level. I have always ridden the big iron which has always been heavy. It's now time to try out a lightweight entry sled. I did love my SRV540 back in the 80s, it weight the same, had some suspension and made 75 HP with Boyesen reed, porting and Aaen single pipe. The Phazer FX has more power, and 10 times the suspension of the SRV.
 
The newer 500 sleds by yamaha, arctic cat ski-doo with exhaust valves are all in the 100-105 hp, not sure about polaris and doo, but cat has an 80 hp 500 it uses in the sabercat and M5. I don't think any F5 or XC500 riders are shaking in in there boots at the release of this machine.
he sled looks neat, but some of us bigger riders (250 ready to ride :drink: ) need a bit more than 80 hp.

The phazer filled a needed market 20 years ago, times have changed in the mountains. I can't remember the last time I saw a phazer or the like back in the hills, I don't think the market will embrace it like it did then.

Just my opinion, bash away.

I think the sled looks great, and I hope it raises the market to a new level.
 
I'm very intrigued by it. Looks are growing on me too. Wife said she'd be interested in a test ride. Should be plenty of power for current Phazer owners (like her), as it has almost 25 more hp!
 
The looks are certainly growing on me too. 80 hp is enough for the majority of riding that I do. Curvy trails that get bumed out easily and you rarely see 60mph. If there's a spot for a bottle to fit under there for an extra 25-40 hp for the straights I'll be more than happy.
 
Have been at the dealer looking at the pics in their catalogues and on their PR stuff. Those pics made me consider this as an number 3 sled just for the fun of riding it on the race track to bring back memories from the 80s.
 
Not everyone wants a high HP sled, and most people I ride with don't use the power their sleds have when we're out trail riding. For it's purpose, I think the power and torque should be just fine, especially for the weight savings. It is capable of reaching 85-90 mph, plenty of speed for ditchbanging and riding the drifts. Remember, it's a ditchbanger, not a lakeracer ! Purpose built for people who like to jump and hit bumps all day long. If you want more power, but less big bump capabilities, buy the Nytro or the Apex.
 
This sled also has a gear reduction which means (i hope) it should be a torquey little spud. 11,250>8500rpm. A dealer I have talked to said the yamaguys he talked to @ the show said it was a 80-90mph sled. On a average day of riding I might take my Attak over the C note 3 or 4 times. And I'm only there for a 10-20 second stretch. believe me if they had a 100 or 120hp version that is the one I would buy. We need some good honest TY reviews of the phazer. After all we are the guys buying them not the friggen magazines.

;)! Got that right! I get sick and tired of the magazine reviews anyway. Most of them just seem like paid advertisements anyway, afraid to do anything but praise each and every sled they write about.
