Then why do you ride an R1 instead of an R6? HP baby!!!
I don't want a Nytro or Apex because of their weight! I want small/lighter like this FX has ~but~ with lots of HP too! I hate trail riding and lake running, but in the deep and often steep, you gotta have HP.
I didn't notice the high peak RPM either. Gear reduction is the unfortunate result....it's the inherent problem of getting more hp out of a 4-stroke, it's nothing more than an air pump and the only way to get more hp is to rev it higher and/or use more displacement [which is why Yamaha needed a 973cc triple to get the 120hp without gear reduction in the Vector engine].
Still, the possibilities are there......

I went to the show on monday,i feel this sled is made for the teen crowd,if your over 200 pounds this sled would be way to small.Im 190 and to me its seems like its a blaster atv size.

I owned the original phazed of course is was a lot lighter but only 55 horse and had an exciter at about 85 horse that weighed 450 and both rocked...this should be fun even at 80 horse...ride it on the bar like you stole it......

I ride an R1 for many reasons, and YES, HP is one of them, BUT, not the main reason. I'd love to have an R6 engine in an R1 chassis, save me a lot on insurance for one ! I don't like the look of the R6 as much as the R1, plus I'm only hovering at 5'7", so the R1 fits me better since the seat is lower and the bike is narrower. (YES, the 04 R1 is smaller than the 04 R6) All I'm saying is that for almost 100 lbs less weight than an Apex or Nytro, 80 HP should be enough for ditchbanging, which is what this sled is designed for. I do agree though, it would be nice to have a few more ponies under the hood, just for those little burps here and there in the soft stuff !!!

80 hp is plenty of power for this sled. Yes, the price level is up there. If you look around, houses in some places are almost double what they were 5 years ago. Is the sled everything we were hoping for? Probably not. But its a pretty good start for a light entry 4 stroke sled.
A couple of crappy winters and sledding numbers are down. Hopefully the 4 strokes (the phazer especially) will get people back into the sport and even better yet get new ones to pick it up.
I think yamaha is going in the right direction with their products. Let's just hope the other manufacturers follow suit and come out with innovative products that will generate more interest in snowmobiling. What we don't want to see is a scenario like the early 80's when manufacturers dissappeared and the sport was on the brink. Good weather and good products will ensure that doesn't happen.

Who wants an 80 hp sled? I do!
I loved my '90 Phazer II. Granted, it wasnt the fastest sled on the lake, but it was a blast to ride in the twistys and in the woods because it was so light and easy to throw around.
Not everyone wants or needs a 150 hp sled. Ive liked the 4-strokes since the RX-1 came out in '03, but I dont want a 1000cc, 150-hp sled.
I do most of my riding in the woods and 80 hp is all you need.
As I see it, the new Phazer has a lot of the things that I loved about my old Phazer (light and should be fuel-efficient and dependable) but it has a MUCH better suspension under it.
Id bet Yamaha sells these sleds as fast as they can make 'em.
