Why?

Stop trying to reinvent the wheel. TD and Hurricane have these sleds well sorted out by now. Buy your go fast parts from one of them so we don’t have to read a JT Metal thread about getting beat by an 850 Turbo.
Huh, that's not going to happen, and the least of my worries.
I'll go out this season like every other one, as always, looking for them.
Don't even ask about mods or whatever....it's the "you never know" is what makes it fun.
If it did happen, I'd definitely post up. Read my posts, unlike most, I don't have an ego to bruise.
I just think it would be nice for the aftermarket to embrace us like they do skidoo.
What did we get....heated goggle bags?!?! Hahaha....

Rant over....carry on.

Are u serious ?

If not for the aftermarket the 998 platform would of been a disaster

The aftermarket (TD, hurricane and pefi) has squeezed the living sh@t out of us, never mind an embrace! And the beauty of the gap is when you open your side panel all you see is stock airbox. If you win you can say” not bad for a budget build with stock airbox” . If you lose you can say “ not surprised this is a budget build with a stock airbox”

Idk, how you mean, turbo. That right there puts a twinkle in my right eye. That could grow on me.

You said you didn't want a 8" filter sticking out of the hood......

Maybe so, and I'm grateful to those that have supported us.
I still believe Yamaha is the industry red headed step child.

Yeah, I've always dug the gap ram air! Mainly for the aesthetics. So clean.
Would look a whole lot better with some black shoe polish on those fasteners. Just saying...

Justin do you ever run it without the stock filter in there? I'm assuming there's a frog skin cover over the intake or is it just the stock screen?

If you're looking for more power from that, it doesn't do anything apparently. KnappAttack had run his with no filter at all and it didn't make any more HP. He can chime in.

Just curious. The first thing that went on both sleds was the stock air box. I blocked off the engine compartment from the K&N filter to the vent so it couldn't grab any of the hot air or belt dust.

This is my first season testing with it. Stock air filter and factory inlet screen. If snowdust happens to be an issue I have some other material ready to go. Im not concerned though, seems to be pretty rare and sleds always thaw out every ride.

Right, I tested the stock box without the filter and no gain, then took off the lid just for a quick test and then of course its breathing hotter air and no gain that way either.

Biggest gain was sticking the filter right out the front vent and letting it grab that cold air, keeping in mind that was using the Hurricane K&N filter which has a nice velocity stack built into it. This was pre closed loop, and it ran too lean to be able to run it that way, it was ugly but it works.

I fully believe that the stock airbox would be a good piece if hat had a larger velocity stack built into it as it runs a true cold air to it, BUT it is also draws from a low pressure area in that its behind the windshield. There's a reason the speed run and drag race sleds run BIG velocity stacks right out the hood! They flat out work ramming as much COLD air as possible into the turbo inlet. It's free HP, but on a trail sled its ugly and would suck in snow and snow dust.

Maybe just a simple out of the hood intake with frogskinz like the mountain guys use would be just as well, but myself I think them to be ugly as crap as well. Fine for the mountain guys as they are always submarining in the deep anyway.

I have run the gap setup for a couple seasons already with the factory filter and screen and haven't had any snow ingestion issues but my data logging has been showing the closed loop has been adding fuel up to +25% at full throttle on the 300 header tune, and AFRs are low 12s, that probably has something to do with the cold ram air the gap inlet is providing as well as a couple other things.
This year I am upping my fuel pressure to ensure adequate fuel on the big tune in cold weather.

Mike, do you think the GAP intake with cap installed does this?
Could you just block the stock intakes to the area behind the windshield and let it draw from the stock intake cold air side?
Also, if you are running a stock muffler tune with this GAP intake, would your tune provider be able to tweak your tune to run with the GAP intake?
Or is it not even worth the effort for the trail rider....

Justinator & sideshowbob, I'm a huge fan of the gap ram air. Justin, your pics give it so much merit. It's a thing of beauty.
The only thing you guys left out, is the fact that one or both are fully vented.
So, if one decides to go in this direction, they would need to commit to optional venting to ensure cold air to clutches.
I'm not completely opposed to that. If I could find a way to do it in keeping the sled looking completely molested.
I sure hope that makes sense.
Definitely up for review....
