Hi all,
New to the forum but have lurked for the last couple years. First off, I would like to thank everyone here for such an informative forum!!! It’s helped me multiple times.
I have a 2017 XF 7000 Crosstrek - 3000 kms and has had the most recent flash (2018) done last year. This year, it’s been horrendous to start even in mild temperatures. Once started, it runs well. Sometimes showing warms start issues but nothing serious. So far, installed new battery, cleaned connections, new plugs, fuel pump cycles every time. Spark is good. I confirmed last night that it’s not receiving enough fuel on cranking. I spray fuel into the throttle bodies while cranking and it fired up and ran well. One thing I did notice is that on initial crank, throttle opened, a very light but intermittent spray from the injectors. Sometimes noted that no spray at all over several cranks of the engine. Have any of you ever ran into this?

Give it a little throttle while cranking, also try adjusting the throttle cable, Yamaha took out a bit too much fuel on this last tune to fix the starter kickback issue the 14 we're having.

Thanks for the reply..... I have tried that previously.... opening the throttle both minimal amounts to half way but didn’t seem to do much. I will however double check the throttle cable adjustment. I adjusted it as one of my first steps trying to find the issue but it doesn’t hurt to double check.

Try hooking a jumper pack on it, if the battery gets a litle old the starter draw effects the fuel system performance sounds crazy but it's true
Have you tried the different methods of starting? I normally just turn the key and count to 3. I do not prime it. If it doesnt start in those three seconds I let off key and try again counting to three. When it does fire I do not let off key for another 2 count. How many miles are on it?
This might sound crazy but I read this elsewhere and have tried it on our 14 that has not had the latest flash. Turn the key on, let the fuel pump pump up, turn the key off. Repeat 2 more times and then start the engine. I tried it and it works great. No kickback at all. It just fires right up. I have no clue to why cycling it 3 times works but it does. I also have updated all the relays so maybe this helps??

That's what I do and I do not have the latest flash.if it is real cold out I cycle it five or six times and it seems to work for me.This might sound crazy but I read this elsewhere and have tried it on our 14 that has not had the latest flash. Turn the key on, let the fuel pump pump up, turn the key off. Repeat 2 more times and then start the engine. I tried it and it works great. No kickback at all. It just fires right up. Failing starters with slipped or cracked magnets have been linked to similar start problems. If the starter's magnets have dislodged the starter might still appear to be functioning properly although it's less efficient at rotating the engine for proper startup. The bad starter rotates the engine slower with less force and possibly a greater draw on the battery. With the newer anti kickback flash I believe the ECU programing cuts fuel and/or ignition when engine rotation and voltages aren't ideal for a successful startup.
