Yamaha has a cooler for RX1 Mountains

The Viper unit is too wide. I have a Warrior and there are some overheating issues with this model. The crossover pipe,under the tunnel, on the Warrior is in the same location as the short track and does not get hit with any snow. Even if this tube was located at the rear of the tunnel extention, would help alot.

Viper exchanger

The viper exchanger can be modified to fit. You have to shorten the hose connectors on the exchanger, so that the overall dimension is about 16". Then you can run the hoses inside the tunnel extensionand out where the hoses connected to the crossover pipe, which you will no longer use. If they are offering a new exchanger for this purpose it probably will already have something like this done.

Add me to the list of overheating rx1m owners.
I have two of these machines and they both overheat. My wife and I were out riding today and in 7 miles we both had our temp light come on, 4 separate times, at the same times! Shovel snow on the running boards and the light goes out for another mile or so. This was in typical west coast packed snow conditions.

Lisa at Yamaha 800-962-7926, says this is not a defect issue because the sleds still run, so will have to buy the new cooler and pay to have it installed or do it myself.

Is the Yamaha extended warranty worth the paper it is printed on? I am beginning to think not! Especially after having to pay the labor cost of have the new improved float bowls installed.

Mountain stuff

I own an 04 mountain with 128 miles on it and it overheated once on light snowcovered plowed road. My friend bought one also and his overheated while sitting at the gas pump.

I also own two articat fourstrokers and they NEVER overheat even if you leave them idling for an hour in below freezing weather.

No doubt the yammies will improve as they breakin, but actually if everyone is having the trouble with them, then it is a design flaw, clearly.

Everyone should call the dealer and inform them of the issue of overheating and Yammie will eventually do a recall on them.

It concerns me that the sled will get that hot since running hot is not good for a long life. Oil breaks down and wear increases dramatically when your engine runs hot.

Curious to know who with 04 machines has had them over heat? I suspected that there was a problem when I saw everyone add heat guages and exchangers. Now it is clear that they need more cooling capacity.

If enough people call on it, yammie will do something, but it has to be alot of customers and it has to sound ligit. So start calling NOW!

If the viper cooler works on the shories, can somebody tell me why it wont work on the warrior, i installed it on my shorty and have yet to see the temp rise above 170 degrees, while moving it stays at 165 even on roads with no snow, i didnt modify the exchanger at all, just added to 90degree plumbing fittings and 2 short peices of hose, the only problem was the hose size is metric so ordered a second stock rear hose and cut it in half for both sides, 500km since then and alls well

8EP-RHECR-KT00 is the part number for the new rx1m rear heat exchanger. I was told it is $86. Dealer must order using VIN# and must contact their RTA (reginal technical authority) before ordering.

I still think it should be covered under my 4 year extended warranty!!!

Let me quote "Repairs become Yamaha's problem, not yours. Y.E.S. will be there, whether the repair costs a few dollars...or thousands."

I spent my wad on the extended warranty, now it should be Yamaha's turn to dance. I know they lurk on this site, let's have a responce!

Pre and Post install would be great. Also approx weight of the kit?

I've only had my light come on once in 2500+ miles on my RX1M. Very long stretch (3 miles) of low/no snow. I shouldn't bother installing this, but I figure additional cooling can't hurt the motor. $86 is cheap insurance.

Also, I don't trust the idiot light. Get this Cyberdyne temp gauge from Whitney. Works fantastic, 1 degree accuracy, you can read it easily in direct sunlight, you can set it to flash at any tem (Mine is set to flash at 200) It's nice because you can watch the temp change 1 degree at a time. You can tell what makes it heat up and what makes it run cool. Simple instal, very small sender. Here's where I put mine. Just drill a hole and thread 1/8 pipe threads.

Looks like a nice deal. Picture appears to have two differnt size hoses to attach. Could you clear this up?

Trouble is that these machines will last a long long time if they don't keep overheating. Sooner or later, you will run on hardpack or where the snow is not loose enough to cool the fins. When that happens the hot light goes on and the machine reduces speed and you have to shut down or quickly get to soft snow if possible, to cool her back down. I suspect that it will be inevitable that all these machine will need an add on exchanger. Keep them cool, (as any engineer will tell you) and the life will be significantly extended.

Someone posted recently an overheat in -20 degrees. If it can do that in those temps the machine is significantly under cooled.

Conversely, my articats 4 strokers never ever over heat and they have a heat guage to tell you the story. Nice of articat to do that, and yamaha should be ashamed of putting out such a nice machine but not enough cooling and no heat gauge, only an overheat idiot light.

Now I need some help on the best placement of the send unit.

BTW total cost is around $62 american for the superduper heat guage.

Those hoses are for the turbo, the sending unit is the little part with the white wire going to it. That and the hot wire are the only 2 wires to it.

Sorry Yamaha. But there is an issue with the Mountain & Warrior heat exchangers. There is not enough. Now Yamaha says there is no issues but I know plenty of Warrior owners that do have a problem. When my wifes' Polaris M10 had an issue, Polaris installed an additional heat exchanger in the rear of the tunnel. Problem sloved. No charge. That is good customer relations. To simply address the problem as "we have not had any complaints" and come out with a new piece for the Mountain and (it fits on the)Warrior by coincidense, is just a slap in the face. These are reasons some companys loose customers. So if anyone from Yamaha is reading this, note, as the end of the season draws near, you will get more complaints. It is inevitable.

Maybe Yamaha engineers should repeat math. 600 + 700 engines have 2 running board exchangers AND tunnel (Front + rear). Now take a 998cc 4 stroke engine, place in a more crowded engine bay, factor in the fact that it runs hotter by nature and then try to use a smaller front tunnel exchanger and 2 running board exchangers with no rear exchanger.

Maybe this is "new math"?

Seriously, everyone needs to bring these problems to their dealer and Yamaha. We all know Yamaha doesn't fix problems they aren't aware of and they apparently are still unaware of this one!

I went to my dealer and complained from the beginning of the season. I was not the only one. Dealer said that Yamaha will not cover the rear heat exchanger and that they have no complaints. My dealer agrees with me in that there are plenty of complaints even at his dealership.
