Going to post this for all to see and then hope to add this to the sticky clutching post for the Sidewinder.

Yesterday at Corporate Yamaha, TY members were able to get a good look, touch, hear and even disassemble some of the Sidewinder.

I brought tools down with me to take apart the clutching and make sure some of the aftermarket stuff was going to still work on the new clutches. Results are in:

OSP adjuster for the secondary will work just the same as the Viper, only problem was the flange on the new secondary bolt is larger than the Viper secondary bolt. 2 options here....grind/machine a little off of the outside diameter of the bolt flange or find another bolt like the Viper bolt. Function will be the same and recommended for the serious clutching guy. Otherwise there are washers that are stacked up on the main secondary bolt that controlls your belt deflection.

8DN belt will work as there is plenty of movement for the 8DN to get correct belt deflection.

Thunder Products 911 cover mounts up nice and snug, no change there and will work perfectly. I will be running this on my primary.

Same with all aftermarket weights and springs, they will all work. Speaking of weights, the new weights have the same profile as the 8FP weights but with more tip weight.

The Sidewinder primary is an amazing piece and will cure a lot of the problems the Vipers had which means smoother clutch movement, better engagement, better top end and quicker backshift.

The secondary will also work so much better and I do not know the specific angle, but the Sidewinder does have a reverse angle helix. This is so power can be raised quickly and then as the weights start to swing, the turbo power puts it all to the steep angle on the helix giving you the ultimate power up top where needed.

Was a great turnout, even tho the rain kept up under the pop-ups most of the time.

Do you have a preference between the 8dn or 8 jp? If going to use the 8dn, would that require adding or subtracting washers from the secondary? Since my other sleds use the 8dn, it would be nice to have that as an option or ar least in a pinch. Thanks for the info.

Great to hear the 911 will match up nicely.. I have run this cover on my last two sleds with over 11k miles. First add on for me is the 911 and a set of Big wheels for the rear skid.

Yes, the 8DN is better than the 8JP (unless the 8JP was changed in material....or the clutching is this much better where the belt grabs more). I like the 8DN belt and for the guy who has more sleds that run the 8DN, I would run the 8DN belts.

The washers in the secondary, you will be adding washers to run the 8DN.

Thanks NOS-PRO. Good to hear. Will have to tell the dealer that is what I want for setup when the sled arrives in September. Can't wait!

I may try the XTX as I've ran it for 5 years now on a 180hp sled. It grips well with no marks on the clutches and can take a beating.
So now it has a reverse angle helix? Another poster said it was a 43? Does anyone know the correct angle?

nice info ,thanks a bunch...i am soooo pumped, trying hard to wait until production models are there before i sign..but man this machine is amazing so far..:yam:

Dealer should be able to do this for you....just make sure they can get some of those washers in stock...I think a lot of Sidewinder owners who previously owned a Viper and switched to the 8DN, will also be doing this to their new Sidewinders.

Didn't exactly measure the thickness needed, but I am guessing it will be very similar to the 1mm washer thickness that was needed on the Viper (just that it works from the front now instead of adding to the rear. Also, only 1 large washer needed to go on the main secondary bolt instead of 3 little ones on the 3 rear little bolts)

NOS I was told by my dealer that the Sidewinder has a new belt to handle the power of the turbo is that true?

I was told by dealer and rep that the stock model belt was still 8JP, same as the Viper.

Belt is the 8JP which was on the vipers. Did they change something in belt composition? No, otherwise a new part number would be on it.

The clutching is so much different so in there testing, the new clutch setup might actually grab the belt better because of the heavier, more flat curved weight design, just as I did the 8FP (COTC) setup for trail and Stingray did the 8FS for mountain guys. They have a much flatter, non aggressive design to grab the belt. But now I am running Thunder Products aggressive weights with a lot of tip weight. I will be doing the same on the Sidewinder, running Thunder products weights and 911 cover. Going to be a fun season!

I always set the neutral with the fixed sheave by machining the split collars. Using that 911 cover to set
the neutral with the moveable sheave, won't that affect the shift characteristics?

I read on one of there add's supporting there choice to run the 8jp was a new angle on the sheeves, and if they did primary would need to match it to the secondary, did you ask them if we could run the 8dn belt? Is the 8dn wider or narrow compared to the new 8jp belt?

You would think so but I never noticed. Should close the gap between weight and roller. More spring pressure also. Once belt is really wore and you set the clearance maybe then it would be noticeable. Might be good thing! I did not measure but the new primary still has the space between weight and roller at rest.
