If Yamaha want to they will hire the best rider there is. In MotoGP Yamaha hired the Italian Valentino Rossi - the most winningest MotoGP rider of all times, and Colin Edwards from the US many times World SuperBike winner, to ride their M1-bikes. Valentino won in 2004 in his first year riding the M1 bike, he repeated that in 2005. In 2006 Valentino came in second after Nicky Hayden (Honda) ending the season only a few points down from the winner. This year is looking promising for Yamaha so far with Valentino in 2nd place riding the new 2007 M1 - 800cc 4 stroke. Valentino has already signed for the 2008 season. This shows that Yamaha can get hold of the best possible riders if they put their mind to it. Yamaha did hire Valentino Rossi before the 2004 season, their 3rd season with the new Yamaha M1 - 990cc 4 stroke. My guess is that Yamaha wanted to have the bike and team ready and working before bringing in a top racer to the team.
