Went to start 17 winder and it didn’t start so I turned the key off to try another start cycle, but the starter kept running, key was turned to off with no effect, hit kill switch with no effect, ended up having to unhooked battery in a quick hurry. After the fact I should have dropped the left side panel and disconnected the main harness for a quicker solution.
Anyone have had this happen? Any recommendations of what the problem could be? I was lucky the sled didn’t start, if it did start and the starter continued to run if would have probably ruined the new starter I had recently installed. I think it didn’t start because I had turned the key off, but it didn’t stop the starter from running.
I have since replaced the starter solenoid and it hasn’t happened again. I’m also wondering if the key switch is going bad, which might have caused the starter to run on?
Any input would be appreciated!

Most likely starter solenoid corroded and stuck engaged.

Starter solenoid is located on battery bracket. Power goes from there to starter.
What Bob said replace starter solenoid.

Previous owner just told me he replaced the starter solenoid less then a year ago, so I’m thinking the key switch

He may have replaced it with a cheapy solenoid and that's why it stuck.Previous owner just told me he replaced the starter solenoid less then a year ago, so I’m thinking the key switch
Unhooking the main harness under the left panel wouldn't have stopped it from cranking.
Get an oem solenoid from yamaha.

I bought one from AC, Yamaha was out of stock with no promise date. Yamaha parts support is very poor now

Good to know that the main hood harness wouldn’t have shut off the starter. What’s your thought on key switch causing the starter not to turn off

There was also an update to the solenoid in around 2018 for both the. Viper and Winder. I’ve also proactively replaced my ‘15 Viper solenoid to the new one. It’s a pretty cheap part and easy to replace.
