I am trying to fix a friend's 05 rage. It only takes about a minute or two of riding and the overheat light comes on and so does the rev limiter with light snow or heavy snow. The temp sensor is the same part # as my Apex, so I swapped it out, and same problem. Not the sensor.
Then I thought it looked like the thermostat, because when the light went out from a cold start, I rode it and the light came on before all the heat exchangers were even warm. I took out the thermostat and fired it up a second just to make sure things were circulating, and they were.
I swapped out the thermostat, and warmed it up until the heat exchangers felt some temp in them, and a quick spin made the light come on again.
I bled the rear heat exchanger before any of this, and after each thing I tried just to make sure I never had any air bubbles or cavitation.
I removed the water pump and the gear on the back, the pin and bearings and everything checked out fine on the waterpump. I could not find a spec for the space between the water impeller fins and it's housing, but it was in nice shape.
THEN during my water pump investigation, I noticed the speedo side axle bearing was down to just a race and it wore the speedo sensor 1/2 way down. I replaced the bearing, hoping the extra load may have had some influence on it, but it didn't.
I also checked the timing in case it jumped, but the timing was right on.
If there are any experts on this...could the fact that the sled is not recognizing the sled moving because of the bad speed sensor have any influence on the light coming on early when in fact it in fact could be still possible under the danger zone? Besides trying to strip some of the black track/road buildup off the heat exchangers (which is what I'll be doing after I'm done typing this), and other ideas? THANKS!!!!! Marc.

Oh yeah. Of all things I missed, the bad axle bearing that was starting to chew into the speedo sensor. The computer saw rpms rise without consistant matching speed, thinking the belt was off and put it into a rev limiter. It wasn't consistant when the bearing was rubbing the sensor, but when I replaced the bearing, it was consistantly acting up not being near the worn sensor. Bad sensor=rev limiter. Now I know. Should have caught that.

The axle bearing/speed sensor seems to be a weakness. Read somewhere that some guys swap them out yearly.

I think guys clean and re grease yearly. They will last much longer by making sure there is good grease in there.
When I popped the seals off my drive shaft on my phazer there was actualy a bit of water in there. A little WD-40 and some compressed air and it was nice and clean. Packed it with some new grease and it should be good to go. It make a huge difference in the bearings in my skid so I would imagine that it does with the jack and drive shafts.
Not sure if it is the same on other sleds but this is how I did mine.

Yea you need to pry the seal off the bearing and repack the bearing yearly and you wont have that problem again.
