I picked up an attak last winter with 5800 miles on it. Rode it for about 1000 and when i brought it home i noticed it would drip antifreeze. When i took the panels off i could smell it too. Someone told me it could be a head gasket leak. How much would that cost and whats your guys opinions on the matter. Thanks

very rare to have any type of engine trouble on thease sleds unless it was severly overheated due to a loss of antifreeze from hitting a off trail obstruction. first did the overflow take get filled to the top and is draining out? is it still dripping now and has it thru the summer? if not fire it up run it for about 10 mins let the foot rails get good and almost hot to the touch. (the left one too it is the last thing to get warm) then look and see if it is leaking and trace it back to the source.

Do you have antifreeze on the ground where it sits

Track the leak down before coming to the conclusion that it's a head gasket leak. As mentioned earlier, check coolant tank overflow level... too much coolant in the system and it will leak out when hot. Check for loose hose clamps too.

It doesn't leak when it sits, only during and after you run it. I did track the hoses that i could see with out ripping apart the sled and didn't find anything. And i checked the coolant level and it is normal.

Where was it dripping off the sled, under the motor or out towards the sides? I had a leak in the middle of the side heat exchanger that trickled down to the front of the running board before dripping to the ground and that is common for Apex and RX-1.

Is there any collant in the oil? it will be a milky white if there is.

Generally, as most have stated, the coolant level may be too high in the storage bottle. When heated the overflow tube will drain off some excess every run. That overflow tube drains into the center bottom access sight/oil drain cover. Remove the bolts from this cover, pull off and I'll bet there will be dribbles of coolant on the base plate. To test the overflow, simply take another same size overflow drain hose and hang it off the side, maybe in a catch bottle and get the engine hot all over again. If it spits more, remove some from the bowl & test again.

He said that he rode it for 1000 miles and it is still leaking and smelling so the overflow is likely not the cause unless he keeps adding coolant- but he says the coolant level is normal so it must be a very small leak.

I checked the oil the other day and looks fine. Yea i rode all winter and didn't notice it so it is a small leak.

You could have a bad pressure cap, happens....is the rubber bung in the overflow tank secured properly they blow off easily sometimes......start with pressure cap first and go from there.

Check all of the hose clamps. I had a hose leak at the thermostat housing that never dripped, I could only smell it when running. Took me a long time to find it and not until I installed my temp gauge sending unit that I installed on the engine side of the thermostat housing.

I have the dreaded drip in the coolers along the running boards. BOTH sides are dripping where the rear skid bolts to the tunnel. I'm not sure if I am ready to tackle that project yet.
