Oh so its a problem of the bearing coming loose not the bearing itself failing?
Yes but it is odd that it made a sound if the bearing itself was still good.

To clear up any confusion the inner and outer bearing of the reduction gear are actually fine and do not need to be replaced. It is the engine case being aluminum and the bearing being steel the aluminum expands more than steel. The tolerance issue is in the engine case not the bearing. My bearing was the same measurements as the one the dealer pulled from the blown engine case he had on the shelf.
The outer bearing spinning in the engine case with oil as a lubricant is what sounds like a scorring of metal objects. I will post a picture with the bearing back in engine case and detail info.

thanks yamahas I have another good modification on the sled and was testing at the end of the season. That made the disappointment a little greater when the engine problem came up because it was really making a huge difference. A little hint on the mod is to deal with the tippy characteristic of the sled. Another little hint just a simple 10 minute bolt on piece. Also this is on my MTX which has a 39" ski stance compared to most that are 41" and it was night and day different.

oh man that sounds very interesting and something I am sure many of us would love something like that.

You can fix it. If your new mod is what I think it is put me down. I'd like to go with a shorter set of A-arms if the COG is better.

I beleive it can be fixed and will attempt next week after I get all the parts and will update. Moving shock mount to lower COG and it is a huge difference keep you up to speed.

when I worked at a Caterpillar dealer we had this stuff in a bottle called "Bearing mount" it was actually designed for this type of situation where there was a loose fit between the bearing shell and case. It worked great on gaps up to .006! It looked like a THICK locktite type material and worked great on everything from 3000hp diesel engines to my buddies ATV motor and even a trailer axle. DOWN SIDE is IF it ever needed to be removed you needed +500*f to get it out.

I'm hoping to revive this thread as my 2007 Phazer Mountain Lite is at the dealer now with a "seeping" outer reduction gear bearing. At first I thought it was a defective oil filter seal that was blowing oil on the primary clutch however, I was able to determine that the oil leak is coming from the area around the primary clutch shaft. Because I didn't have a clutch puller I dropped the sled off at the dealer and their diagnosis was a "leaking outer bearing" on the reduction gear shaft. Can the outer bearing leak? Isn't it a sealed bearing? Can oil from inside the case actually make it through the reduction gear to then seep out on the shaft? I would think the rubber o-ring between the case and the gear would be a source of seeping but the dealer says it's the outer bearing. UGH! $700 for the gear set (#20) from Yamaha and $500 labor to pull the engine and fix the "leak".

Yes but they may be matched gears. Are they offered separate?
