I just bought a 07 Phazer FX. Took it up to Tug hill, and rode for about 200 miles before it started feeling like the rear end wanted to come around. We adjusted the center shock to reduce the ski pressure, and took it for a quick run. It felt like there was a ton of darting, so we softened the front springs a little.
Then took it for another run, and at about 25 mph I lost all control and flipped the machine. My buddy behind me said it looked like a ghost took the handlebars and ripped them out of my hands. We limped the machine back, and changed all settings back to the way they were.
On this run the exact same thing happened. At around 20 – 25 mph the handle bars yanked to the left (while sitting on the machine) and it went tumbling.
Again we limped it back, and found the ball joints were super loose. I replaced tem, and took it for a run, not as bad, but there was a feeling similar to darting, but just not the same.
There does seem to be a large amount of free plat in the handlebars, I would say about 10 degrees either way before the linkage starts to move.
Anyone have a similar issue? ANY help would be great.
Thank you

Have you checked the ski alignment? What is the toe set at? Are the a arms or anything else bent?
Something is waaay wrong.

Check the upper ball joints as well. Just noticed the bolt was loose on mine, but I caught it before it got bad.

We put a tape measure on the ski`s, and they looked straight, but are they supposed to toe in? if so how much.
all the joints are tight now,
also what kits are you talking about that tighten the steering free play?
one other thing of note is that i just found out that none of the recals have been done on the sled. I will be taking it in tomorrow to have them done.

flipping the rubber bumpers was the biggest improvement on mine. It puts more pressure on the rear of the ski vs the front.

The updates are more for the rear and i think some locktite on the balljoints you need to run a toe out on the sled 1/2 inch or so i think from the manual.
if you remove the airbox and a few other front end parts you can see the stering system there are bushings that guys are replacing with brass bushings someone on here makes them and im sure cannondale or someone can show you the link for that thred. just tear that down and look for your free play you can replace them with bushings from yamaha but its hard to believe theres a big problem from wear. Im guessing if you look something is busted or bent in your internal steering.

You will want a toe out and shim the skis

The kits that take most of the play out:

UpBushman-Steering linkage/spindles
NCI-Lower balljoints
Those are the main ones
Hope that helps!

IT all depends on how familiar you are with the sled. when i did it the only thing that was new to me was taking off the 8 or so bolts to remove the front end.
i would say 8 hrs of work and your on the snow? tough for me to tell since i did it over a few days when ever i had time.

I went with ulmer but I think anything will be much better then stock plastic bushings. imo if they are close get the kit from them. Hopefully someone can help you more then that.

front shocks on the phazer (07) have to have quite a bit of preload on them or the sled will do that - i wrecked my 07 after i was trying to soften the front end up, the shocks will give out low in the stroke if you dont have enough preload. you also have to preload your center shock as well.
