Hi guys, So last winter I was using my 09 vector and it started to make a whining sound in the engine. I ran it like that for a few hundred miles with the whining noise disappearing and then coming back. And then came the day... I was riding on a groomed trail and the sled just shut off on me. I tried restarting it but it just sounds like the motor is knocking(does not sound normal when turning it over) and I have yet to start it since that day. I thought it was the timing chain or chain tensioner so I pulled the motor out of the sled and took off the valve cover. The timing chain is really tight, like when I push down on it with a lot of pressure it might move 1/8 of an inch. Also the cam gears marks look like they are matching up so I don't think it is off timing. This is pretty new too me so I included a picture to see if you guys think the timing is good? What do you guys think it could be? Maybe a bearing gone bad? :o|

Take plugs out and turn it by hand to see if all the pistons move.

Also check the pto stub bearing

How do I go about checking the pto bearing? That's the bearing by the primary clutch right? I don't think it would be the starter clutch because the starter is working turning the engine over and also the sled conked out on me when I was driving it.

Does it crank over with starter when plugs are out?

If you put plugs back in does it clunk and clatter when you crank?

Thinking its an issue with one way clutch

Starter clutches can make bad noises and yet the starter can still work.

So guys, Why do you think it is in the starter or starter clutch? I was driving the snowmobile when the engine died, so doesn't that mean it is in the engine not the starter or starter clutches? Hibshman25 when the plugs are in, trying to start it it is clunking. I have not tried turning it over with the plugs out.

Might have lost the pick up coil on the stator. They can act funky till they quit. Had it happen on the 09 phazer.

If it turns over free by hand then I would try to crank it with the plugs out. A bad one way clutch may still crank motor over if plugs are out.

Starter relays are known to stick at times. If relay stuck and starter was running for a long duration while riding the machine I think it could potentially wear the one way clutch

I think the starter is cranking the engine over with the plugs in. I don't think the starter was stuck on because I have the starter saver warning light which I don't think was on at the time. I might try and take a look at the one way bearing like cannondale27 said. I could be a bearing because like I said it was making a whining sound before the engine died on me.
