Looking for some advice/opinions here. I am going to be converting my 2011 XTX to a Backcountry track. I have a Bender clutch kit, weigh ~200lbs, ride as much backcountry as I can find in Michigan but do spend time on groomed trails. I like to have the top speed when I do open it up but that is not often, more corner to corner ride style and all about the acceleration and low/mid range power. I love to pick the skis up any chance I can and prefer as much deep powder as I can find. What would you guys think I should run for a top gear. It currently has the stock 21/39 setup. I am mainly trying to decide between a 19t and 20t top gear. Ulmer has recommended I go with a 19t for this setup and my style. I don't want to lose too much of my top speed however I know the track is taking some of that away but I also don't want to hurt my mpg's much either as the trail tank will be a summer mod. Thanks :rocks:

Also if anyone has either top gear they want to get rid of for a cheap price I'd be interested.

I went with a 20T when I changed to the backcountry and 9 tooth avids last season. Only got to ride twice last winter but it felt awesome! It felt so much faster just because it actually hooked up on the trail. Oh and I have stock clutching with 14.5mm rollers.

I ran the 20 on my xtx. Was pretty good.

My mtx is hitting 91 mph with 18 top tooth for reference so a 19 on that track should be a bit better pending you are clutched appropriately. I also have a pipe that builds good power at 9000 rpm.

I went with 19t top gear and 8t whal bros extros. I'm the same as you I do a lot of ditch banging and and off trail riding. With this set up I'm still not overly happy with the ski lift I can get out of it. I'm thinking of trying the star suspension kit to help improve weight transfer. Any other suggestions out there other than trading for an RTX

I believe the 2013 comes with a 20t top, which is what I'm leaning to as others seem to like the 20. I think regardless of the gear I'm gunna notice a big difference simply because of the hook up with the new track.

ouch so would you say about 20mph slower than stock in the same conditions?

I would agree with this statement.
On the lake on a LLLOOOONNNNGGGGG wide open lake run I could hit 114 on the speedo under optimal conditions with stock clutching/gearing(no idea on GPS).
I changed to the BC track and could get about 96 with 21 tooth top gear. Again only on a LONG pull down the lake.
I switched to top gear to a 20 tooth and now I can get about 95, but the bottom end is improved and the midrange about the same I think.
I'm light so I don't think the drop to the 20 tooth made as much difference in mid-range as it would for someone around +200lbs

That being said I notice the 20 tooth alot more when I ride double on the trails. I thought the sled "cruised" better on the groomed trails with the 21 tooth though just because of the slightly lower RPMs needed o go the same speed.

No hiding it, the BC is a + for acceleration / traction in loose snow conditions over the ripsaw but you take a hit on top end for sure, which the nytro is not famous for already.

For the most of the riding I do the BC is still a better track. I feel it makes my sled much more versitile.

Sounds like I'm on the right track then, I know I'm gunna lose some top end with the track and thinking that dropping to the 20t won't take any more away than the track already did but instead give me more down low which is where I use it most anyways.
