all the people i ride with including myself have had to add some wieght (or install a clutch kit) to the primary clutch as the sled gets more and more miles on it (breaks in) because it starts over reving...i have a 06 vector gt with 2200 miles on it now and noticed that at the end of last year my mpg was not what it was earlier that year...the other thing i noticed was that my RPM's were about 300 to 500 higher at crusing speed and on the top end...so i added a shim to my secondary to tighten up the belt and that helped a little but i was still over reving some...this year i ordered a new clutch kit (most of my buds just added more weight the primary) and put in my new broke in belt with 140 miles on it to replace my old one that had the other 2060 miles on it...i only have ridden 50 miles so far this year but my rpms are back where they should be and my gas guage didnt move on during that 50 miles of iowa ditch and drift busting riding...

What are your corrected cruising and top end RPM's?
Could be a bad/misadjusted float on that bad carb..

adding weight to primary?
I understand how clutches work, but am not sure how you simply 'add weight to the primary'. Normally you would replace the removable weights with something heavier, right? If you could share what your riding buds did I would appreciate it. I have an 07 Rage with 3000 miles and run close to 9K at WOT in the mid-range, which I know is too high. My son rides an 08 Vector, he's at 2000 miles and he's running 8500 during the same conditions so I know I need to do something. I'll probably go with a clutch kit next year but adding weight would be a quick and easy improvement for this riding season....

Those white plugs are too white (lean) IMO. Get that sled into a dealer!

Re: adding weight to primary?
fredster- have you checked your weights? If not, I'll bet you $20 the weights are dished out and need to be repalced along with the rollers. Same thing happened to me. Over revving and MPG dropping started at 3000 miles. Replaced at 3600 and RPM's went back down to 8500 and MPG's back up to where they should be.
Stock Yamaha clutch parts are junk!

rage clutches
I just cleaned both clutches yesterday and the rollers looked good, but I will take another look today and focus on the weights, too.
From what your note said, the weights wear down over time, correct?
I find this kinda frustrating. My last sled was a 2000 Polaris XLT Triple and I never touched the clutch (other than cleaning it) in over 8000 miles.

at the end of the year i was at 9000 to 9300 on the top end and 8400 to 8800 while cruising...i am now back to 8600 on the top; note it does jump up to 9000 or so when i first pin the loud handle then it slowly drops back to the 8500 to 8600 mark...

I see close to 9K but never higher, and only if I peg it from a standing start or from 20-30MPH. It drops down to 8600 or so above 60 and stays at 8500-8600. My top end was 107 on the speedo last year, and this year. Seems like you would lose some top-end if the primary won't shift all the way out?
My MPG averages 17-18, never been much higher, and seems to be pretty consistent. Running the track looser seems to help the MPG's a little.
I'm thinking I'll run it as is for this season and install the Ulmer kit over the summer, including the secondary spring and custom helix. I read their instructions and it looks to be pretty straightforward.....

Well I got my sled back from the dealer today, and no charge! They phoned me yesterday to tell me that they took carbs apart and found that part of the slide needle assembly was missing. They told me that when they serviced it last they must of lost it then so no charge. They also GAVE me a new belt as they said mine had a flat spot on. Pretty impressed with these guys. They don't even realize that I bought 5 new sleds from them in the 1980s. I only bought the sled privately this year, but I know the previous owner bought and had it serviced there, so I guess they went by the vin # to know they serviced the carbs last year. Going for a `150 mile ride tomorrow so I'll see how it is then.
cheers

Just got back from a ride, and after 77 miles my sled used 3.6 imperial gallons. That's 21 mpg, so I guess it's fixed. Thanks to all that put in their 2 cents.
Awesome sled!!!

Awesome sled!!!
Wait untill that motor is broke in ,then you can add some weight to the primary clutch weights and get it up to 24mpg . Costs less than $20.00
if you do it your self .
