16 xtx le. Rear evol will hit idler!!

Ummm......Yamaha never built a competitive chassis. The early SRX they stole from Sno-Jet and the Phazer they stole from a Canada company went broke a decade before. I am in no hurry for them to try to build there own chassis again :)
Definitely a bold statement. We all take inspiration from others, but stealing implies willful theft of the intellectual property of another company and I haven't read anything that shows this. I think that it is fair to say that Yamaha snowmobile engineers would be well served by more creativity and larger budgets. It seems to me that they've been only halfway committed to the snowmobile division for most of the 2000's. I think that this may be changing and the arctic cat chassis bought them time to reinvest in this division. Regarding the shock blunder, I bet someone got a stern talking to at Yamaha for this blunder!
 

On a different note, similar to the shock issue, has anyone noticed the two pieces of thin metal on the upper part of the suspension being worn down from contacting the track and clips? I can see in a couple of areas where the paint on my rear suspension is being warn to metal. I have about half this metal "U" left before it is gone. I will see if I can get a picture to further explain.

Yup. The wire pieces. Better those than shock or arm. I touched up paint on whole skid and replaced front arm. At 6500mi I thought I could see cracks starting and those wires were thin. Arm was about $100. Pretty normal thing on any skid.

I only have 3,000 miles on the snowmobile, so this seems like premature wear to me (I did have a rear suspension issue which cause the airshock to not hold air). On a similar note, are the two are the wheels on the inside of the rear suspension needed? From what I understand in the above posts, Yamaha is just going to have them taken out to fit the new EVOL chamber. I don't have the EVOL chamber, but it might take them out regardless.

5 Yamahas and never had a one that the paint all stayed on suspension. Its like a sandblaster under there at times I am sure. As far as front arm wires. shocks always got wore on eyelets on all my sleds. This is better. A guy could make a wire and weld it on or just weld a bead on wire itself to build it back up. Wasnt worth messing with. I just threw a new arm on. I am sure this one will make 6500mi also. Not a big deal.
 
Yup if you were a true yammi guy you would have carried a few front W arms for your NO-action and mono shock skids. I can remember several trips where we had to replace front arms and onetime 2 , 1-05 RX and 1 06 apex in the 06 season due to complete failures. I even broke one at the shock mount 1 season after Weltracer did the beef up and powder coating.

It's a sacrificial part like slides or carbides. It's only going to last so long. But at least you know you can go another 3000mi before worrying about it.
 
Our group has only had two snowmobiles with major issues. A 2000 SRX that would chew through hyfax (easily remedied with Polaris wheels and adjusting the suspension setup) and a 2008 Apex that is constantly burning up the speedometer bearing.

Sorry was not busting on you just saying, that's been status quo since the introduction of the RX-1 in 02. I can tell ya I am not your ordinary sledder from 01 to 08 I averaged over 10,000 miles a year. I would go to the UP with 4 sleds alone and come home when none were repairable in the heated hauler.

Oh by the way good choice on the XTX I have 2 and keep making them faster:Rockon: As far as I am concerned this is the most reliable chassis - Partly by Yamaha I have ridden. And I am 53
 
We really didn't answer the main question I was asking (whoops)! The two idler wheels on the inside of the skid, are those needed?
 
Well I can tell Ya that my first set of Hyfax went over 3000 miles before I replaced them with Duponts and the only wear was in front of those wheels. I am sure you will burn through them quicker without them but needed, probably not. you could always fully clip the track for better wear.
 
I was looking at going with the SlyDog Bogey Wheels (with the fan design) up front, running a little larger of a wheel to prevent wear at the bend of the rails. I'd really like to be able to run an EVOL chamber on my shock in the future, but I know that these wheels will impact the mobility of that shock in full compression.
 
To answer the question. No. You do not need them on the inside where the evol will hit. That's the service bulliten coming out. It will say to take them off.
