did he use an oe stator or an rm (aftermarket) stator? seen on vector posts that the wires are backwards for the pick-up coil in some cases.

True. I recently had a Sportsman 500 brought to me with a no start after a stator from royal distributing was installed. I checked the timing with a timing light while cranking and it was firing about 70 degrees before top dead center.
So I simply switched the pickup coil wires in the plug at the CDI box, and that fixed it.
