Yamaha Phazer 2007 GT
Hello all, I appreciate any help ahead of time.

Here is the scenario.

2007 Yamaha Phazer GT 2200 miles

I went riding just like any normal day. I was crossing the lake in about 12" of fresh powder. Which was my first time being in that much powder with this sled. I had the throttle almost pinned for about 10 seconds and then the sled acted like it wanted to quit. It bogged down so to speak and shut right off.

I got it back home now and fully charged the battery to see if that would work an it didn't.

The sled as of now still has power and it will start, it just won't turn over. When I do try to start it the primary will move like normal and then after a few cranks it starts making a popping sound in the engine area. Almost like it is backfiring.

I wanted to try to figure this out myself before I send it to a dealer to try to fix it.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Almost sounds like it is flooded. Change the plugs. That would be my first check.

It must be 'turning over' if it starts......

How long will it run when you start it?

It does not start. Turn over meaning that it just sits there and tries to start. It doesn't actually start at all. And when I do that I get the sound of back firing that comes from the engine.

Ill check out the plugs when I get home. Thank you

took the plugs out and tested them to see if they would spark. both sparked but they only sparked separately from each other and it was only once or twice out of 10 or so revolutions.

getting new plugs tomorrow to see if that helps

still appreciate any insight on what it could be.

Crank broke. Have to replace the entire lower part of the engine............................

really?
sounds like you just packed the airbox full of snow & quit on you.

did the new plugs do anything, or just somehow figured out the crank broke?

New plugs didnt do anything. Took it back to the dealer and they looked at it and put a camera down by the crank and it's broke in half.

All I was doing is going along at 55 mph on a lake and it broke

Waiting to hear back from Yamaha to see if they will warranty it or not

they have the entire engine torn apart. The gears inside the engine that is attached to the crank shaft, the teeth broke off of those gears.. engine is trashed. Still haven't heard anything from yamaha...

Sounds like the reduction gear. The early ones had a defect and they self destructed in short order. Maybe this one was never taken to high RPM until now. If they balk at replacing it, I would push for them to do it as a goodwill gesture as this is a well documented issue.

Interesting.. Thanks for the info!
I was going at a higher RPM when it happened.. but I don't beat on sleds as hard as most people. The dealership will do nothing to replace it. The only thing they are doing is looking for a used motor for me to buy myself, and contacted yamaha asking if they would goodwill it. Which they haven't responded in 4 days now.

Used motors that they've been showing me vary between 1800-2000...

Edit : Do you happen to know if Yamaha ever warrantied this issue?

No, it would just be covered under the initial or extended warranty or goodwill shortly after it expired. It might be difficult now since the sled is 6 years old. There were a few here that experienced these failures. Even a few pics of the carnage.

So do you think it's worth sticking another 2 grand into the sled? Or should I just part the rest of the sled out (everything besides the engine) and get a different sled?

Yamaha said they will not do anything about it to help. The dealership gave the list of parts it needed and the amount of money it will take to get it like new again..... 50/50 warranty with the dealership

total is around $1,100 for me to fix it.
