Just got off the ice the other night from a great run and my temp light went off. The next day I checked out the sled only to find a hole in my front heat exchanger. Looks like a stud flew into it. So the question is: How should I proceed; Dealer to replace at 10 hrs labor plus parts or; take the track off and try to get it welded. What's the consensus?
Id yake the track off and either weld or jb weld getting the heat exchanger off is not an easy deal to do ut requires a lot of work and a lot of disassembling I did it last summer not fun.

Boy there's sure allot of them popping up this year. They make some very good products that if applied properly do hold up very good. If you could get it welded that always seems like the most reliable way though. There are products like Devcon or jb weld that work well though. Not a good situation either way. Hopefully no engine damage.

I sent a rock through mine last weekend but I couldn't find anyone who would weld it while it was still in the machine. Its not an easy task but i've never had luck with jb weld so welding was the only opition.

I would trust Devcon over JB weld. Devcon is much more expensive to buy but much better also. They use it sometimes for airplane repairs. I have used it quite a bit over the years. Getting the right mixture is not as easy as JB weld. 1 to 1 with JB and devcon is like 7 to 1 or by weight. Something like that. Rough the area up good, give it something to bite to and make sure there is no antifreeze in the area . Give it 24 - 28 hrs to cure depending on temperature and it will hold pretty good. Last resort if you can`t get it welded.

Last year I put a stud through my exchanger. I pulled the track and had it welded right in the sled by North South trailers in Boonville. Any welding shop that works with aluminum should be able to fix it. I cost a bought $60. There was an old hole in the exchanger that a previous ower had repaired with JB weld. It didn't leak but I had it welded too. A new 1 1/2" intense track and I am running strong. No more studs.

Did they burn off the old jb weld or were they able to grind it clean? Figured once it had jb weld on it you wouldn't be able to weld it again.

I used a heatgun and got off the old JB weld before I took it to them. It was easy to get off.

Dukemerc just posted the same thing with a stud penetration. After the last couple of years reading similar threads I'm now positive I'll never run studs again!

I sure can't help but wonder if it's because of the torque these motors are putting out. I don't remember it being a big issue a few years ago.
I'll never run studs though that's for sure. No need for them here anyways.

ya studs suck overheated mine from stud damage caused severe engine damage warped head scuffed cylinder and seized compression rings to the piston. buddy went out for a ride on his after this happened to me and he also had a stud go through the exchanger but he caught it in time before causing engine damage

I hope I caught mine in time......I want to repair it to get the rest of the season out of it. I just can't afford to buy a new track right now.
This summer I'll be extending it and going with a 1.5" track...
