I have considered PortYamaha. I have a top notch business down the road that rebuilds starters and alternators. Might see what they think about it. That would probably cut the time waiting for the new part.

I am hoping to have it ready for this weekend.

That was my thought too. No reason it should be any different than rebuilding a car starter. I'd be interested to hear what is failing on these. Are the armatures shorting? bearings failing? brushes wearing out?
 
Maybe I will take it apart and see what failed when I get the parts back. If the starter pinion gear wasn't messed up a little, I would have highly considered it.

I guess they might even had a replacement gear on hand, but I am leaning towards OEM right now.

Fondy Electric is highly regarded around here.
