2010 AK sled projects

This stuff came last week...

Last year I had a couple of my flex joint/header clamps loosen up all the way. I never thought they clamped tight enough to begin with so I ground about an 1/8" off the stop of each one. Now they actually get snug before bottoming out. I also used .032 safety wire to tie each one closed in case the bolts start backing out.

Tube chassis :bling I want a bulletproof Nytro under 430 lbs dry. I shouldn't say I want one because I WILL build one. These are my most current drawings(on version 10 about, lol).

Made a plug for the bottom of the T-stat housing(no longer running the t-stat)

Coolant hose from tunnel to front cooler.
IMG_1219.jpg

Coolant hose going to t-stat housing that will have the bottle inline. Going to be very simple and clean when done.

Replaced the stupid allen head screws on the carb boot clamps with phillips head screws. Not sure why Yamaha puts allen head screws in hard to reach places.

Started on a front bumper tonight. I just wanted something different that would match the tunnel a little better than the stocker. Can't decide if I like it or not. Thoughts...? Good? Complete fail?

I'm going to weld on 5/8 spacers on each lower side since the brackets don't lean in like stock. The nuts are just temp spacers.

The bumper works for me. Nice job.

Cosmetically, it would be smokin if the side braces were round and not flat metal. But that's just being picky.

tube frame

Hey Nik just wondering if you have seen the tube frame Nytro made by forty1thirty for rob alford. Maybe you can get some ideas there. forty1thirty.com

I've seen Robs sled and it's way sick, but it's also very time consuming to build. I'm trying to make mine with as few jigs as possible so it will be easier to make a couple more frames. I'll start a separate build thread in a couple weeks. There's also some good pics on FTX Motorsports website of a few tube chassis' for anyone interested.

Finished the cooling tonight. I used a bottle from a 2002 Mtn Cat, they're small and only $25($15 for the cap). I changed the routing of it and I think it came out really clean.

To help support the coolant lines/bottle I added a small tab to bolt a rubber hose clamp to.
IMG_1252.jpg

bent two pieces of 6061 for the coolant lines.
IMG_1255.jpg

Added another rubber hose clamp so both side are supported.

Clearance with gas tank

clearance from the other side

The coolant bottle fits perfect in the recessed part of the gas tank.

Pretty clean setup with no p-brake, reverse, or coolant line

I really hope yamaha is watching this thread!

Running the stock airbox still? Also did you make a custom brake lever so you can still have a "parking brake"?

No Custom brake lever, but I may swap to a Cat lever in the future. They're really light and have the p-brake built in. I won't be running the stock airbox, I ordered Ulmers K&N kit which should be here shortly.

I got most of the electrical buttoned up and finished installing the gas tank, seat, and exhaust.

Here's what Ulmers K&N kit consists of
IMG_1295.jpg

I washed the air horns with soapy water to get all the oil off then put the filters together. You have to remove the spacers in the clamps to further tighten them.
IMG_1308.jpg

Got a bracket design figured out and bolted it to some plate before welding it to keep it from warping. Made it out of .125 5052 and it feels solid.
IMG_1310.jpg

Cleaned it up and added some small #3 solid rivets to act as "guides" for the zip tie so it can't slip off the aluminum.
IMG_1312.jpg

Underneath the brackets are some approx 3/8" spacers to hold the bracket at the right height.

A few more of the completed install.
