Hi,

First year owning this sled, it was services when I bought it, about 1500km's ago.

Yesterday I was riding and when I got to 1/4 fuel (3 lines) it started acting strange when going around 50km/h. The trails were fairly bumpy so I thought maybe it was the bumps combined with the lowish fuel.

It would almost cut out, like it was about to stall and exhaust made some noise, not quite a backfire. It seemed fine as soon as I hit 60km/h, and it was fine idling, no issues starting it.

I filled up about 20-30km's later then we hit an open lake for a while, I thought it was gone but same thing happened a few times when I hit the slower parts of the trails. I made it back home, overall probably 80-90km but now I'm a bit paranoid to go out again as sometimes I ride alone.

Any ideas on what I should check? I would prefer not to bring it to the shop as there is only a few weeks of snow left here.

should I pull the plugs and check those? I'm not overly mechanically inclined but I can check on the basics :)

Need to check to see if it set any codes.

hmm, on the 2011? I don't see any codes displayed anywhere. Is there a process to have them displayed?

EDIT: I followed these steps I found on google:

1-Hold down the "select" and "reset" buttons together.
2-Turn on the Ign., and continue to hold until "diag" is displayed.
3-Release both buttons, then depress them both again until the display changes to a Number.
4-using either "select" or "reset" scroll untill you see #60. There should be a small number below it. (error code)make note of number.
5-now scrol to#64, and again a small number is displayed below it. This is the error log(counter)
5- If it is not "zero" press the "gripwarmer button to return to zero.
6-Shut the Ign. off, wait...., then back on again. If the Condition that caused the error is no longer present, no codes will be displayed.

on step 4: I was able to press Select and I got to d:60 however the number showed on the bottom display was 00
I attempted to scroll to 64 however it skipped over that.
Another thread mentioned checking 61 and 62, they are both displaying as 00

did you check the exup cables or have them checked and set? i check both my sleds every year. sounds like it might have a broken cable or 2 or exup valve might be broken.

ah alright thanks! I'll see what I can find on those, may need a shop visit though in that case.

how many km on the sled? did the dounuts on the 11 at 12000 mi for the 1st time. do the rag test with the sled cold. mine would fail cold but pass hot when i did it and they fell out when i did them.

it has about 14000 miles, I bought it used this season so not sure what has been changed on it..

wtf is the rag test? lol.

Sorry still a newbie, I haven't had a sled in 20 years and the one I had back then was an old beater.

My 2012 is at just shy of 12,000 miles and I know the donuts need to be replaced. The backfires are on hard decell right now. And more of a (foof) in the pipe, than a true backfire. Otherwise, it performs flawlessley. On my 2007, it would blow donuts every 4000 miles almost to the mile.

On that sled as well, when the clutch side bearings were not greased, the chance of it taking out your speedo are common. At that time, the ECU will have issues telling when the machine is moving, and throw up a tors error. So if there are no errors on the screen I would doubt that is the issue. But when it went on my 2007 GT, it acted just like you are talking. It would cut out like a fuel or spark plug issue. When in actuality, the ECU was putting it in limp mode due to TORS. I was giving it gas, and it was moving, but the sled could not detect it as the speedo pickup was trashed from the bearing going out and throwing the driveshaft out of alignment.

On a sled with 14,000 miles, you can expect these wear and tear items. Check those bearings, do the rag test to test the donuts, and just expect that both may need to be replaced. Other things are out there, but those would be the two I would hit up first.

Good luck,

Rag test - with the sled at idle, hold a wad of rags over each exhaust pipe, blocking them totally off. If the sled continues to idle your donuts are bad, and the exhaust is able to leak by them easily. If the sled stuttters or stalls, the donuts are good.

did the rag test, it didn't stall but it stuttered quite a bit pretty much immediately. Guess I will check the exup next and see if I can find the clutch side bearings!

yup, sounds like time for donuts. you will see and have to remove the exup in any case when you do the dounuts.

From the videos I have seen, it is possible to slide the exhaust back far enough to slide them off and new ones on without removing the entire exhaust. Is this wrong?

You don’t have to remove the exup the cables have enough play. It barely slides back far enough anyways. It’s best to remove the flex pipes one at a time.
