The engine died after a day trip, luckily within a kilometer of reaching home, VK was towed the last km. I wasn't riding it at the time, my brother was riding along side a highway and the engine quit and wouldn't start. When the key was turned to start it, we could hear the starter motor but it wasn't engaging the crankshaft.

Brought it to the dealer and they found the bolts holding the one-way starter (sprag) clutch sheared. Doing some research - it sounds like a fairly common occurrence in Yamaha machines (Snowmobiles, ATV's, UTV's, etc). I've racked my brain as to what would cause this to happen while riding. Anyone have ideas why this would happen? Sprag clutch failed? Bolts failed? I'm worried the mechanic will just replace the parts with same ones and just hope it doesnt happen again.

The machine has just over 1000km on it, so everything was covered on warranty. But I need to trust this machine will work as I am often far from home, 3 to 4 hours-ride away. Any suggestions on a more reliable clutch/bolt hardware?

For those who are curious, the problem was just fixed under warranty. The 6 bolts holding the sprag clutch to the flywheel didn't have locktite on them, started to back out and eventually sheared, breaking the oil pump chain in the process. I hope that's the last of this issue, and I just got unlucky with assembly line at the factory.
