Actually its at my buddy shop now, planning on studding it tonight as well. So we figured might as well take the hood off for the first time and change out plugs. I'll have to give that a read as well! Thank you!Do yourself a HUGE favor, its early in the season, you have a buddy willing to help in the shop. Take the hood off, this is a fun learning experiance , remove BOTH lower belly pan pieces by drilling out the rivets, rivnut or screw them back on. You will THANK yourself for this next time you need to work on it. While you have the hood and sides off, check ALL the hose clamps. Best advice I can give you is to go to the SideWinder section and find RockerDans build thread. READ it from start to finish. Then enjoy your winter.

Former Yamaha sleds:
2004 Venture 600 2002 SX Viper 700
1997 Vmax 600 SX 1994 Vmax 600 1989 Exciter
1986 Vmax 540 1986 Phaser 1981 SRX 440
And put in some fresh fuel. Being a left over as was my 16 when I bought it, who knows how long that fuel has been in there. I doubt you’ve put any in yet. As stated before use 87 as it ignites better and will start easier. This is not a high compression engine so premium is a waste of money and it burns slower. Had the same learning experience as you only I was up north for the first time when it happened to me. My ears still hurt when I think of the backfire inside the trailer.

haha, yeah thank goodness it was an open trailer. But still reccomend throwing 87 in the sled even though it'll be sitting for the next 1.5 months? And put in some fresh fuel. Plugs are easy to change....
Remove both side panels, front clip,
Remove console around gas tank,
BTW.. the threader plastic nut on fuel tank can be stubborn when first removed.
Access plugs from exhaust side.
Also don’t be surprised if your plugs don’t look fouled(wet).
They will probably be dark brown/ light black.
Unplug fuel sender and remove assembly MAKE SURE YOU MARK THE POSITION BEFORE REMOVING
Suck out remaining fuel that way.
Reason being all your plastics will already be removed and it’s right there.

Also just make sure your battery cables are clean and tight. Any voltage drop off causes weird starting issues in almost any engine. Corrosion builds up quick. Easy to check.

Glad to hear... enjoy the upcoming season. Once you hit the 500 mile mark and the motor loosen up a bit, it really runs it’s #*$&@ off.

Yes, talked to Kevin at Port Yamaha. Said plugs might be fouled but might clean itself after the first ride. Either way, lesson learned.

I purchased a 17 viper XTX this year, brand new 0 hours. My dealer told me that I should get use to holding the starter key for 1-2 seconds after start up. This is my second 4 stroke and I learned the hard way ability letting the machine warm up prior to shutting down.
Odd discovery, I installed a Excell pipe a few weeks ago and and noticed right away that the starting issues was completely resolved. Any thought? Could the stock can have enough back pressure to be causing this?

Yes because it will run richer with stock can. Holding the key 1-2 seconds after starting is very good advice. Prevent kickbacks.I purchased a 17 viper XTX this year, brand new 0 hours. Was tipping my 2018 Viper on its side checking my carbides and I lost the balance and laid it down on the right side for about 5 minutes before I could get it up righted, now it won't start. Disconnected the battery for a few minutes hoping for a reset, but, that didn't work, rocked it on the left side a couple times, no help, any suggestions are appreciated.
If oil light is on pull off the tube on top oil tank and put your finger over the hole in tank and crank engine till it starts. did you lose oil?
