Thanks for the update. That’s too bad. He could have helped them a lot. In the chassis and suspension area. I know I am going to take a lot of flack for this but the Singleshot with a good shock is not bad. Don’t knock it till you try it. I would love to try a Procross Yamaha someday. Just about got my Vectors paid off so you never know. Went for a ride 2 weeks ago. Following my Wife. She had the updated shock. It was easy to see based upon the tossing and beating I was taking over the same bumps behind her. That that shock was really doing it’s job. It was like watching the video on Team Fasts website. Of two sleds going over the same bumps with different suspensions. When I rode her sled by myself I immediately noticed less arm pump from not being kicked in the #*$&@ by the rear suspension.
 

I recently got back from a beautiful snowmobile trip over a two day weekend and I will agree that the newer sleds handle the bumps better at speed, but on nice groomed trails my sled shined and was most comfortable, seen nothing but Ski Doo's everywhere, Cats were second, a few vipers and Winders, and Polaris every now and then, it struck me funny the first morning out up the mountain as where I like to raz you Yamicat pro cross lovers, our pack had to pull over to let one of those big Ski Doo Expeditions go by and be damed if he wasn't pulling a big sleigh with a Winder on it down the hill, owner had to leave the Winder in the woods all night, I heard chain case issues 1500km on the Winder, owner was not happy, guess he didn't get the so called $500 upgrade done after paying $20 grand plus for his sled, my Apex worked just flawless!!
Reminds me of the time we had to leave my buddies Attack in the woods for a broken driveshaft. This was after spending $1000’s on suspension upgrades that never really did get that sled to handle.
Glad your sled preformed flawlessly on “groomed” trails. So did my 74 el tigre.

Just seen Gerard 2 days ago on what must be his personal Sidewinder while I was out for a walk. He was running it hard and tweaking the rear skid often (looked like an Airwave under it.) Basically no snow left and he was running on a long stretch of snow next to the bike trail.

I didn't realize the Apex /Attack had drive shaft issues, must have been a fluke, my 79 el Tigre 5000 would have ran nice on groomed trails but we didn't groom trails in 79, could keep crank seals in the motor anyhow, another known issue Cat didn't fix.

That is exactly why I want a 2016-18 XTX with the rear air shock. Rode maim's 16 on pure trail junk at speed and you could swear you were on a cloud. Viper Dave has an M20 with front air shocks on his XTX with an onboard compressor and same thing, rides awesome. There is nothing like the Apex motor sound, and the reliability.
 
I have a customer with both the 18 146 and 16 146. The difference is huge in ride quality. Yamaha really messed up with 16 shock calibration.
The Apex is actually a little on the loud side imo, at least compared the the quiet Winder.

maim did get the upgraded shock for his 16, I think Snorunner got an upgraded one for his Wife's Vector from Travis. It was too bad they did not upgrade the Vector shock for their customers like they did for Apex customers. When I first rode my 03 RX I back in the day I was sold on the sound, liked it better then the sound of my 03 Viper along with the 4s unlimited powerband..

I’m as true blue as it comes, but have replaced more than my fair share of Apex driveshafts over the years. Let’s be real here, they can ALL break.
I have issues with the lack of consistency in parts and assembly with the Yamacat sleds. At this point in life my sledding budget is very tight, and quite often I need to build what I want to ride from broken or rough and discarded sleds rather than buy it. Once I’m done building it, I have to keep it for many seasons, replacing what’s needed along the way to keep myself on the trail as long and as economically as possible. This has never been a major issue with the built in Japan sleds.......easy to service, not terribly expensive to own for long periods of time and pile a ton of miles on year over year. They’ve had good bones so to speak. If the quality of the drivetrain was improved a bunch, the sleds became more consistent unit to unit, and some more “quality” was used in the build process I’d have no problem riding a Yamacat. I’ll never dispute that they work great, because I know that they do, I’m just not convinced they are where I’d like them to be quite yet when it comes to the LONG term DQR that brought a different type of tangible quality to my Yamaha sleds of the past.

If you put the correct updated seal in they were no longer a problem.....they were updated.....

No fear, The new ones are the same way. Once you fix the small problems they have they last a long time. Very easy to work on. I have 10k on mine.
In fact, the fixes are cheaper than the old sleds.
Really looking at an upper gear bushing ($10) R.O.V. delete( free if you are clever ) and a way to secure the bearing to the driveshaft, be it the BOP wedge, a pin of your own making , Franks's Yamaha design or set screw.
After that all the problems are the same for all sleds---bushings, wheels, maintenance ETC.
The Cat DNA excuse is WAY overblown here on this site.

Funny Yamaha didn't issue a service bulletin for the drive shafts, I think i'm going to call them, Never heard of any updated seal, they all looked the same to me, but they did have a plate you could install over the seal after you drilled and tapped the block on the clutch side, wasn't interested in investing anymore money in junk, bought a pure Yamaha 340 enticer instead, one of the best sleds I ever had.

All you need to do is stop at a dealership and take one for a ride you probably shouldn't though because of you think that the signal shock or shot or whatever it's called rides good. You will be buying a Pro Cross the ride and handling are not even close . I don't understand the Pro Cross Yamaha's have been out now for almost 10 years now and there still guys riding almost vintage sleds by today's standards and think they have a better riding and handling sled. In no way shape or form does any Delta Box remotely compare to a Pro Cross chassis. Take one for a day and give it a fair chance and you will see for yourself.
