225 Mi. ATTAK REPORT

Bodacious, I have the 1 1/2" Ripsaw and So far (240 miles) I am happy with it. I just got back from the U.P. tonight and in the kingston plains area we had some O.K. powder riding. Based on looking @ the clearance in the tunnel I would be a little skeptical of going any taller.

I spoke with Hartman, and Mnt Performance today, neither thinks that a helix change will be colse to the solution, it may be a slight help so the say, but they both recommend the Attack needs more length and lug height to get it to float,(in their opion). Obviously they both sell long track kits, 144" is what they are recommending for me. Mnt Perf doesn't have a rail ext kit for the MONO yet, they want to sell a MNT suspension, I tried to tell them that I'm NOT A MNT GUY I just hope to float this beast in 1'-2' of POW, and I'm not willing to give up the MONO's ride for lenght. They also recommend that new drivers are necessary (internal/external type) should be put on so that the track tension can be reduced to a minimum. This is getting very complicated. As for Yamaha never stating that the Attak is a "crossover" is correct, sorry for my previous post....my bad.... now I just need to decide if it's worth dumping another "G" into this set-up or cut my loses and buy a sled that will suit my needs. I'm disapointed that Yamaha does not build a chassis for the Crossover segment of the market share, I may have made a poor purchase for my needs, but sometimes that's just the way it goes. :o| Thanks for all the help and responses.

Before you spend a boat load of money try the clutching. I think it's silly to spend money without out trying a cheaper solution. As you said Hartman and Mountain performance are in the business of making money. Their not going to tell you ya a simple cluticng change will fix the problem. That makes them no money.

What ever you try I hope it works out for you.

You can't really compare the 600 Renegade to it (flotation), but this is EXACTLY why I got rid of my Warrior back in '04! Does not have enough flotation for the weight = TRENCHING! And of course, the old ProAction-skid didn't help either. I thought the Attak would be a little better, but I guess not. To make it float it NEEDS to be 144" or longer...
I would have tried to sell or trade the 136" track while it's still worth anything, and stretched the Attak to at least 144"... :D That would be a sweet sled!!!

It could be the same reason why the Mach Z renegade is said not to be very good off trail. It might just be the weight? It may need more floation because of the weight?

All I know is I will NEVER buy a 600+ lbs (wet) sled with a shorter then 144" track. Not after riding the longer track sleds for years. I can't justify buying any shorter since I ride 50-50 powder and trails. The shorter track can be OK on flat land, but point it up a hill, or better yet break trail in the woods, and you will soon understand what I mean... The longer track makes it more versatile. I just don't see any big drawback with the longer track (I'm not a top-speed guy). It's not that much slower through the corners once you get used to the handling of it.
To me it's like buying a pick-up with 4wd vs one with 2wd. You mostly drive with 2wd, but you can put it in 4wd when you need it. The one with 2wd sure don't have any option. Just my opinion... :D

I'm going to try the 43 degree helix, I just don't think that it will be the fix though. But what the heck, it's worth a whirl. Secondly I'm investigating tracks, I looks as if a 141"x1.5" will fit under the tail peice, and a 144"x1.5" will be close to making it too. What would be ideal would be to find a 141"x16" but I'm not seeing that listed anywhere.
Thanks again for all your input, this has always been a great site! ;)!

Great to hear, is that a 1.5" x 136"??

Hi there, I have a 2004 warrior and just put the mountain skis on it, I thought that it was great in the powder but now that the front end floats better the backend seems to trench more.

I had a 98 600 XT which I put adjustable transfer rods in cause I wanted more weight transfer and when I adjusted it to transfer more it became the worst sled ever in anything deeper then 6" of snow. I mean the slightist bit of throttle would cause it to trench and get stuck. But when I adjusted it so that it wouldn't transfer much weight at all (caused it to spin alot on hard pack though) it was a totally different machine, I mean it would go where ever I pointed it.

Now this may or may not work for you but it's worth a shot and it costs you nothing so you may want to try it, I know I will be doing it to my warrior when I get some more snow to try it out on and I'm confident it will provide me with the desired results.

Good luck with your sled and I hope you get it to work well for you. Oh and you may want to suck up the limiter straps a bit as well so that you can get that angle of approach a little better. :yam:

370 miles to date, I tightened up the transfer adjuster about half way it does seem a little better, (less trenching) but the snow conditions have improved as well ( stock F7's blow by me while making a fresh track ). I'm going to tighten it even more and may suck up the limiter straps too. The mountain skis work very well, the sled reacts to steering inputs in the deep and loose snow much, much, better, I did not find anything negative about the mountain skis on the hardpack at all. I'll report again after testing some more. ( still thinking that more track lug would be a positive move )

bodacious please let me know how you like the mt. skis on hard pack and how much carbide you are running,i have ordered a pair and may put them on hold if they dont handle better than stock on hard pack, and add a little extra float in the deep. thanks Pete

Has any other Attak owners found the same problems off trail with the Attak?Because thats all I ride is fields and cross country in Saskatchewan if this sled is only good on trails I won't bother picking up the Attak that is coming for me.Also looked at 800HO Renagade maybe better choice for off trails.4 stroke maybe the future, but is the weight going to be that much of a factor?

I had the exact same problem. I could get the front end up, but the rear would trench. I'm looking into a 1.5 intense as well. I would like to see how they perform before buying one though.

one more thing to consider....the skids (pardon the pun) attack angle...yammies angle of attack stock sucks for powder...so the same track reacts differently on this trail machine than it would on lets say a doo with a better rail angle..

dirk..yes the clutching will help...might a limiter strap adjustment help further...or rolling his chaincase?

also...i think it's pretty cool that dirk is trying protecting your $ and willing to do something for you like send you his helix.. ;)! [/b]

Just wondering how you all made out with the changes made to help the deep snow performance of your Attak? Did the helix change really help enough or is in suspenion settings? I do know that in order to keep up with a Renegade in 12" new soft snow on a logging road something has to be done on my Attak. Its not even close. In covering an actual 120 mile distance in new soft snow conditions the speedo had approx 160 miles show on the tripodmeter. Lots of spinning going nowhere. Bit embrassing since I have 25 more HP than the skidoo and the 9000 less miles on the odometer.
