It's time for the first oil change. I've been looking at filters, and I found out the Yamaha filter is a fair bit shorter than aftermarket. Normally I'd think getting more filter media is a plus, but I've also heard of guys having the filter ripped off and losing oil.
Are there aftermarket filters that match the OEM ones in size?
Will a good skid plate rectify this problem?

Aftermarket filters are about 3/4" longer than the "correct" Yamaha filter. They are a great replacement for the OEM filter if you buy a quality filter but you need a good skid plate to protect that area. Read the blue highlighted links below for info. If your sled still has the OEM "engine protector" my advice is to get rid of it.
