I gained 4 mph in the 1/8 mile going to a PB80 from the adapt in similar conditions. Time for a secondary change..any thoughts on the STM secondary?Any updates on how the PB80 does?

Has anyone ever setup the Cat clutch on a Winder?
I put the TEAM on, was nice and quiet but I did not like the performance and slipping down low, I could have helped that out some with shimming and weighting but didn't feel it was worth the effort specially with reports of them cracking and blowing up.
Team Primary on Winder secondary mocked up
Well it can be done and rather nicely I might add. Just as I figured, the driven needs spaced out more than the Yamaha primary for the 1.5" Cat belt and wider Team stationary sheave, and either the helix or hub will need machined on the secondary to allow more secondary helix/movable travel...

The ticket for keeping rollers alive and belts intact, was the old RX-1 primary and of course the TAPP I went to after the RX-1 primary. I like to try them all for myself. The old RX-1 primary I have sitting on the shelf and will not be going anywhere, same with the TAPP thats on my new machine.
Before putting on the Adapt, I'd go to the PB80 myself, that was a nice quiet clutch too that lays the power down and is easy to tune. After a few years on the Adapt, it seems like it too is not the perfect clutch after seeing the issues.

Was just curious about it as my local dealer says Cat lowered the price on them. They're reasonable for cost. Over $500 for just rollers and weights from Yamaha is ridiculous.I put the TEAM on, was nice and quiet but I did not like the performance and slipping down low, I could have helped that out some with shimming and weighting but didn't feel it was worth the effort specially with reports of them cracking and blowing up.

The adapt is not perfect for sure but with a billet cover and adapt specific weights and good clutching that keeps temps down its very good. Mine has over 4000 miles and is just as wuiet and tight as the day I recieved it. Alot of the trouble is the cover and people using yamaha weights with side spacers. Some of these combos may work but many lead to disaster. Someone had posted a pic of some yamaha weights on an adapt and the tip of weights was ready to pass the roller. Any wear on roller bushing or even distortion or flexxing of any sort and your done. Saw a pic of plastic side spacers that had begun to melt and weight moved over and destroyed clutch. This poor clutch calibration had massive heat to start to melt plastic spacers. Saw another where plastic buttons had started to melt and come apart from heat and he noticed clutch got louder and continued to run it anyway till failure. Run proper adapt weights with decent calibration and good cover and you should have good luck with it. Easy to work on as well, button changes require removing a spring pin and only time spider will come off is for roller bearing or moveable sheave bushings. Parts are pretty cheap IMO

Thanks for the replies.
My only concerns were the different belt widths and that the adapt had the spin bearing under where the belt sits.
Which belt would you run with an adapt and the Yamaha secondary.

Cat belt 212 or ultimax 829,827, little wider than yammy belts which the adapt is designed for, otherwise to much side clearance movable to belt, secondary will "fall" into place sort a speak were it needs to run, automatic belt tension built in with roller primary bearing, another plus to cat belt being wider it can handle a bit more power. Thanks for the replies.

Not sure what you can get them for in Canada but here it seems they've come down. $390 + weights + hardware. Was just curious about it as my local dealer says Cat lowered the price on them. They're reasonable for cost. Over $500 for just rollers and weights from Yamaha is ridiculous.

When does CC expect to have more in stock at that price? I wouldn't doubt the price goes up when they have them in inventory lolNot sure what you can get them for in Canada but here it seems they've come down. $390 + weights + hardware.

Not exactly the same,(2 smoke) but after 250 miles and doing some work on the Adapt on catalyst I really like this clutch. Not a great sample size but I find it very easy to service and seems to be pretty damn efficient.. Only issue I have is the super lightweight cheap cover.. Once you put a good cover on it, I feel it will last. Only running 130 HP on it so it should really last.. Time will tell.. . Seems they dropped the price down on these clutches when the "service bulletin" came out on the Teams

A PB80 is about $950 CDN complete for 280HP. The ADAPT is $526 CDN (390USD) plus you need a billet cover ($300), Weights and spring ($400). So its still a bit more expensive for the ADAPT.Not sure what you can get them for in Canada but here it seems they've come down. $390 + weights + hardware.

I may just stick with TEAM for half the price. I see them for $500 USD ($675 CD) and needing weights and spring which I already have. And can re-use all my secondary setup.
From reading these clutching threads, the ADAPT seems like a pain to tune. People swapping weights, helixes etc and still not running right. The cover is essential apparently, seen lots of cracked covers on the high mile Quebec sleds.
Despite all the doom and gloom, I have had NO issues with my TEAM. I clean after every ride, dont blow belts and am tuned.
The problem with switching clutches is also all the new tools needed as well (Pullers ETC).
Each clutch I have seen seems to have their own problems....

What's the difference?
I'm guessing nothing more than what we used to call a heavy turbo slug, which was just a deep set heavy metal slug in each slider to get enough weight in for the HP. I ran them on my turbo 1200, but not sure they are needed in the 998 as it turn higher RPM and doesn't necessarily need the big weights. You should be a able to get enough weight in the std one easily enough for that little bit of power.
