Aftermarket law

this is only an advanced bill in the senate...and did you see the wording...it's quite a bit different than what I was thinking....78 decibels at full throttle(subjective) at 50 feet at a right angle and 88db at idle seems workable for an excell once I repack it...I hope

SJ - the key difference is the test method - SAE J-2567 is the test method explained earlier in the post where you have to rev the motor to 4000 rpm - all the other verbage is from the old law and the old test methods - would question whether some of the old sleds (older ZRT's for one) could pass this!!

May I ask, How many people that has posted on this topic, actually live on a snowmobile trail year around? I do.. In fact my house is 60' off the Jordan Valley Trail.. (that's why I built here) I have been here 15 years and I can count on 1 hand how many times, snowmobile noise has bothered me or my neighbors. So is snowmobile noise a real problem or an excuse or a way for the DNR to make $$$ for the state and a way to get a foot in the door for the tree huggers?

The MULLET LAKE trail case. Those folks would whine if your sled was totally SILENT. Believe me... They don't want snowmobiles there Period! I've been to those meetings and talked with the land owners. Noise isn't the problem for them, Snowmobiles are. What we should ask ourselves is, are we giving them more ammunition with this new bill or are we in fact, protecting our trails with this new law. Is is possible that this law could be giving them more ways to take our trails away?.. Think about it, before you crusify me.. And this is coming from a homeowner who lives 60' off the trail.

You see, I don't personally think it's the snowmobile or noise that's the problem. It's the operator... If you have a louder sled, then you should have enough RESPECT to idle by somebodys house or business.. Yes, I think it's operator error and boils down to Respect or the lack of it....

I am open to comments and I am open to learning different idea's... If I'm wrong, I'll say I'm sorry and admit I'm wrong.. I'm easy! lol

Just an honest statement and question..

I agree entirelly....not to say there havent been a few that have bothered me...but so have more than a few bikes ....semi's....aircraft etc...

I think it's people that just dont like snowmobiling period..and anytime you let this state have a toe-hold on anything controlling...it's just the start..

Can someone point me where it says this is law and not just senate debate..thanks

this leads me to believe there still is time to call the lawmakers, here's what the state shows:

Recreation; outdoor activities; noise emission from snowmobiles; provide standard. Amends sec. 82126 of 1994 PA 451 (MCL 324.82126).
Last Action: 06/27/2007 - referred to Committee on Tourism, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resources

I too live very close to a heavily used main trail and everyone in the area goes right by my house to get there (I actually get an adreniline rush every time one goes by lol) The point Sledhedz is trying to make is no matter what you do there are still going to be those that don't like any sort of motorized recreational activity and the more we allow them to effect what we do and how we do it the worse it will get. Used to be majority rules these days unless it's unanimous lets not do it :o| Not impressed with how society has allowed the minority to set the rules.
Just my 2 cents

SledHedz - this is a response I had on subject awhile back

.....it boils down to knowledge and respect - knowing what the laws are and respecting them - I've owned motorcylces, hot rods, ATV's, pick up trucks, and snowmobiles over the past 25+ years - not one of them have had stock exhaust - yet I've never received a ticket for loud exhaust - when I go through residential areas or accross private property I idle through - does everyone do that? - no - and they are the ones that should be penalized - not me - it is no different than any other law!......

I think we feel the same way - however, to put a little spin on this, now the DNR as least has the ammunition with this law to crack down on the idiots that have no respect for anyone else - if we still idle through town and other sensetive areas, we more than likely won't get bothered :dunno: I also see what you are saying about the old "give them an inch and they will take a mile" routine with the law makers - I guess I would interested to see how hard it gets inforced!!

Well here in WI the way they are enforcing it for ATV's is they have one guy with a Radar and 3 more alongside the trail. When you come by they step out pointing at thier badge. When you stop and you will unless you want a felony fleeing charge they then sound test all the machines time allows.I do have to say when they stopped my group the test was done correctly twice on each. For the ATV's its 96db.1of ours failed bad rest squeaked by.Only warning was given out since one that failed silent core had blown out that day.All had aftermarket exhausts.

noise

like i said before i live on us2 and hear harleys all day long some louder then others, i think because more doctors, lawyers and bussiness men ride
harleys they look the other way.

Yeap, I have a stock exhaust just incase. I agree with the comments above, that the sound is only a small part of why we loose trails. It's the sledders that go right around the stay on trail signs and boondock somewhere they shouldn't be.
I've been running after market pipes for years now, knock on wood, never had one ticket. I also do the right thing...being not to have my sled pinned going through town or residential areas.

Pipes+++ for the last 12 years and never a complaint...I use good judgement and am considerate of others and their property...sad it's coming to this

Can still run some aftermarket exhaust and still be legal. White Knuckle Performance has proved that, and I hear from a lot of people that my exhaust sounds great and not too loud. Just do your homework if you are looking into aftermarket, and you should be good.

Don't you mean "MY" exhaust. lol

I agree, a little research goes a long way. I know mine will be a bit over, but I should be able to squeak by.

I respect everyone's opinion but I think it is bull$%^(. We have a home with the trail about 600ft away from the rear of the house with heavy traffic and the front of the house is on a lake with light traffic, and it never bothers us. Its just another double standard like not being able to ride the jetski at dusk but being able to boat with open exhaust in the middle of the night. One boat with open exhaust in the middle of the night during the summer is way more annoying than a whole season of snowmobiles. Should they outlaw the boats exhaust. No! How about the #*$&@&^%$ pounding his hammer this summer at 6:00 every morning ? Or how about the fricken trains that go by 20 times a day. How many Harley's have open exhaust ? How many cars have loud exhaust ? How long is the Harley season in Michigan compared to the 8 weeks of snowmobile season if we are lucky.Should we outlaw any of them ? NO! We first get hit with emissions, now sleds cost a fortune. Then we allow speed limits and times we can ride, now noise level. Next will be studs. What's next the length of your snow flaps or turn signals. Maybe we should outlaw the people that go 20 mph down the center of the trail and never look back, they annoy me. Maybe we should outlaw the green machines because they annoy me. Or maybe my buddy with his neon orange machine and his matching suit. I agree we need to respect each other but what is happening to our FREEDOM ?

:bash:

:bash:

the politicians who sponsored( a guy in the traverse city area) and co sponsored (one in s.w. mich, one in oakland county and one in southwest detroit??)this bill should be called and given an earful...
if we banded in numbers and made ourselves heard...we'd have the same freedoms as the others mentioned...
