MI Noise Limit FYI

Saw them checking Friday on trail 8 in munising. Two DNR officers on sleds, one off on the side of the main road in a truck. They where also checking trail permits and registration.

No way really? i just got back from riding up there and i seen them everywhere ! did not see a DB meter at all,Munising to Grand Marais ,Paridise,Newberry,Trout lk and around.DNR didnt stop me,trails wont shut down because of my exhaust im keeping it on ! sled is loud when i open it up from the front because of the ram air lid,wonder if they would ticket someone for that?

Im not a throttle pumper ,look at me im cool dude ! there are many out there !

I am a former drag racer and NHRA even had to mandate race cars install mufflers in order to keep tracks open. Keep in mind some of these tracks are only open a few days a week. They were also limited on what time of the day certain classes without mufflers ( top fuel, ect) were able to run. Along with that they even had to build noise barrier walls 20ft high. You may only be going by a persons home once with your sled but keep in mind during the season he has thousands of sled go by. All cars in the class had to do it so there was no performance advantage for those who did not because they could not compete. I would rather keep the peace than loose race tracks or trails. By the way, keep in mind that you may think it's cool but others who don't are being forced to listen to it. There are several states that do not allow any aftermarket exhaust on snowmobiles. I have a lot of friends who put a set of pipes and a can on there brand new 2 strokes before they even ride em. Some actually go slower with them installed. I am sure this hold true on some 4 strokes too.

I get it , totally understand. But i think it's all these 2-smoke BRAAAAAAPPPP Boyz that make more noize then us 4- strokers anyway.
My pipes are at about middle of my thigh , Braaappers are 8in from the ground.they will probably pass where I will not. But I passed multiple DNR this weekend and nothing happened? Ride on.

Ah you guys are lucky. In Ontario they have a law that basically says you can not change anything on your sled to anything not stock. They are only applying it to exhaust so far but even if its quieter or they same as stock does no matter. No meter just a fine. My Excell in Ontario is illegal in Eastern Ontario. In NWO they are not after us!

What they are using is section 2 but section 1 applied to mufflers. So in a sense vaguely and loosely interpreted change of ski's, carbides, handlebars, track, addition of studs, rear or front suspension, etc could be not allowed and subject to a fine. Now to define what is required under the Motor Vehicle Safety act is a lawyers paradise.

Muffler charge has been beaten in court as on fellow says but they still keep charging.

18. (1) No person shall drive a motorized snow vehicle unless it is equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation and no person shall drive a motorized snow vehicle which has a muffler cut-out, straight exhaust, gutted muffler, hollywood muffler, by-pass or similar device upon the motorized snow vehicle. R.S.O. 1990, c. M.44, s. 18 (1).

Removing or modifying any component

(2) No person shall drive or permit to be driven any motorized snow vehicle upon which any component or device, which was required under the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act (Canada) at the time that the motorized snow vehicle was manufactured or imported into Canada, has been removed, modified or rendered inoperative. R.S.O. 1990, c. M.44, s. 18 (2).

Exception in racing area

(3) Subsections (1) and (2) do not apply to a motorized snow vehicle while it is driven in a racing area sanctioned as such by the council of the municipality within which the racing area is located. R.S.O. 1990, c. M.44, s. 18 (3); 2002, c. 17, Sched. F, Table.
