Air Box Mod updated

hey stingray I'm thinking of doing the airbox mod along with my aftermarket can. I will need a fuel controller right if I do this this combo? If so what one works good and are they hard to install and use

thanks
Marc

Marc, Jim at EVO says to use the EVO 2.5 ECU mod and ask for 87 octane (unless you have ready access to 91) with my air box mod and aftermarket can. That way you get all the EVO coolness and the rev limiter along with no starter kickback.
:sled2:

How does this airbox mod compare to the others out there, e.g. Ulmers' or Excell's mods, except saving you $3-400..? I see the Excell kit having an intake tube which is positioned next to the radiator so it get's fresher air.

thanks stingray;)! I'm on the fence with the reflash at the moment. I would like to hear about more real world testing before doing it. I like the fact the it eliminates the chance of a starter kickback though.

Cannondale did a real world on the snow unpaid for test, I will let him respond but he said they were all close to each other if I remember right.

They were. Could not tell difference. As far as Evo flash solving kickback I would not count on it since 14's also had starters go.

I had been told the EVO flash solves the kickback, which most were equating to the starter failures. As I do not know exactly what caused the starter failures so I cannot say evo solved that but it sounds like they fixed the starter kickback. Time will tell.

Thats what we all were told but that was based on the assumption that the 14 flash did not kick back and that is false.

Air box mod with stock can, would I need a PCV or similar?

I had a look at the air box today and was wondering whether a snorkel below the air box would help air flow in to the air box better, as there is a "tunnel" underneath the radiator towards the engine and the air box opening. Or would that restrict air flow, and cooling, for the engine?

You answered your own question ;)!

It is my opinion that area remain open for underhood cooling. BTW the old Viper originally had ram air but due to issues to lengthy to post here it was blocked off by Yamaha.

No PCV is needed for air box mod with stock can, but once again check your spark plugs after running to be sure

Roger that! Okay, saves me some thinking, engineering and glueing ;) Probably also why Excell is placing their intake snorkel next to the rad..?

Will stick to the "standard" mod of cutting it open and remove the snorkel.

Seems like you've thought it through good, just a reminder to anyone new that's tuning in, the airbox mod "how to" video is posted in the frequently asked questions section if you have any concerns, that may help.

I just pull the airbox out , opened it and the side where the divider is has a white chalky residue on it (on left side where the plastic is supposed to be bent looking at the sled from the front) is that normal?
