Hey guys,
Trying to come up with a cheap and easy way to avoid getting snow in the air box and let in more oxygen. I've read a few posts on solutions on here, but what about punching a couple of 1"-2" holes in the air box cover and putting foam over them and blocking off the snorkle intake underneath? I've asked my dealer about the K&N's and he says that they may not fit properly because they are not designed specifically for the RX1. Dunno if he knows what he's talking about or not. I work alot of hours out of town and don't have time to screw around with fixing problems. Spent over an hour on the mountian trying to climb a hill (because of a snow blocked intake i didn't know about) that my buddies on the ski-doos climbed with ease. More than a little emabaressing. The ski-doos are running fantastic right out of the box and i expected the same from my RX1 mountian. I've had it out 4 times now and it has let me down 3 of those. I got a smokin deal on it, but if the problems persist - or i have to dump more money into it to make it run like it should have out of the box, then that new 1000cc rev is looking more than a little tempting.
I've installed extroverts, reverse, re-jetted for the mountians and installed 2" risers. Most, if not all, of my riding will be in the mountians.
Thanks for the help - fantastic support group you have here

Check out posts for Freedie's ECP filter kit. They are designed for the RX1.

I've read a bunch of stuff from freddie. this guy seems to know everything there is to know about the RX1. Although his ECP kit looks like a great product, as i said i'm only in the market for a quick, easy and cheap fix. i don't mind spending the money, but i'm just frustrated with my RX1 at the moment that it doesn't work the way it should the way i bought it. i'm at the point where if i have to put more money into it, i'll just buy something else instead. but if i can tweak it a little here and there cheaply and easily maybe that might change my mind and then down the road i'll start putting more into it.
or maybe i'm just expecting too much that a stock sled should be able to work without mods....but it seems the skidoo guys are doing it. Please help me keep my yami and help me find an easy fix. snow should not be in my airbox and it should not block the intake and i should not have to spend more cash to fix this...but the yamaha doesn't think that this is a problem. maybe not enough snow over there in japan

Yamaha
It would be imprudent for Yamaha to admit they have a problem with the air box because it would cost them thousands to fix everyones. As for the Skidoos of the 5 guys I know riding 800 revs this year 4 of them have blown their motors. All for the same reason. So inherently all snowmobiles seem to have their quirks. (I DO AGREE WITH YOU THOUGH..THAT NOW MORE THAN EVER WITH THE AMOUNT OF MONEY WE ARE SPENDING ON THESE MACHINES WE SHOULD BE HAVING A LOT LESS PROBLEMS THAN WE ARE PUTTING UP WITH).In 04 I have had no problems with my airbox. Granted I do not drive in the mountains but we have lots of powder here this year and I do not have near the problems the guys are seeing on the 03's.

I was all for buying the wife a Summit Rev 800 HO until I saw this; http://www.petitiononline.com/bombiS3/ . If the 1000 cc motors are the same, I think the new 900 Polaris or M7 will be what she gets.

what do you guys think of using these in the airbox? I would love to get some sort of under-windshield cold air kit fab'd. Maybe a good summer project with my new fibreglass hood?
