Good to know. Thanks.
I actually do not mind a stiff sled but atm mine is too stiff even for me.

Maim, I couldn't remember those spring rates, so I looked through an older post:
Nytro XTX uses 1200 nm springs
Apex XTX uses 1500 nm springs

I have a 11 apex xtx and all you have to do is contact star suspensions and update your suspension to there modified version. it will be the best $300 dollars you spend on the xtx. Yamaha should have designed it like this. great transfer and the suspension actually strokes the way it should. fine tuning after installing the kit and your sled will actually ride very well.

star kit uncouples the skid does it not? not sure I am a huge fan out that, would like to ride one though.

Go with the star setup works great much better ride.maim said:viperdave can confirm this but I think I might have the stiffest xtx I have ever seen.
I weigh in around the 250lb mark and haul a set of saddle bags on the sled loaded with min 20lb of gear I use at times on the trail.
springs are on full soft and shock is on full soft. sled has 2000+ mi on it and when I sit on it, it barely moves. I think I have bottomed the rear once on an OMG bump that I hit the seat pan on.
when viperdave sits on it it is perfect for him and he is larger than I am. my springs are supposed to be the same part # as his yet his has to be on full hard for him with spacers and is too soft. for me his is perfect.
getting tired of being beat to death in the ripples.
wondering if anyone else has had this problem or am I just lucky?

XTX Apex Rear Suspension
I have gone through much of the same thing you all went through. Suspension was very stiff and beat me up. I did a couple of things to alliviate the problem. First moved the limiter strap which took some of the pressure off the rear skid. I have my shocks set on the softest settings and have the block on the stiffest setting and will actually be installing the SLP block as it has more settings so I can get a better sit in. I also weigh 255 plus saddle bags and gear. I have found that it is working pretty well. I also had a Viper that almost killed me as that was by far way stiffer than the XTX. SO I have had the front shocks revalved and found a big improvement with that. I will have the rears revalved as soon as I can and that should do it. Essentially had them revalved to memick a dual rate set up. I was running trail 8 coming back from Gwinn a and I was very happy with the way the suspension was working.

Im guessing you have the Fat Boy springs. Part # should be on them so you can check.
Mine came with those and it was a Lumber Wagon.
I put in the 1200 NM Nytro XTX springs and it is pretty good for me but I run 55lbs less than you.
I don't take it out on real lumpy days though as the SE is a better ride in the lumps and I can't use 300 hp in the moguls at my age anyhow.

I had the same problem, rear suspension killed my back!
I installed the star suspension kit to my xtx, perfect now!! Seriously, spend the $300 and install yourself. You will be amazed at the difference................

Well, I ordered the nitro xtx springs. Putting them on on Saturday along with some other goodies. Brother is trying to con me into an epic ride for Sunday. I figure the ride will be close to 200 miles if he has his way. We will see.

Did you get to put some miles on those lighter springs?

yup! now it tranfers like a bugger. skis where 2' off of the snow when I punched it. 207 miles on sunday. my back was grateful for the time I spent on it. spent most of my time on proaction venture as guest was having problems with ski lift in the corners. springs are on full hard but I need to take some spring out on the front shock and stiffen up the rear shock as it travels through way too easy on full soft. drifts on the lakes are brutal atm.
over all much happier!

got another 200 miles in over the weekend and I am loving the nitro springs. loosened the front skid shock almost 1-1/2" and transfer is almost normal now. have the rear shock 2 clicks from hard and that helped with rear travel compression speed, so only bottoming on large whoops now. going to install 4 position adjuster blocks as it could use a bit more on the rear.
now to wait on the off season and get the front skid shock rebuilt stiffer as I still find it strokes too fast. might be my short butt as I almost sit within 6" of the fuel tank.

the 4 position blocks have done the trick. Yamaha part # sma-8jp39-bl. they are for a viper but work on the apex just fine.
