AGAIN, this all boils down to where & what you ride. On mostly groomed trails (which aren't always good by the way) this HEAVY Apex rules. I recently rode '12 Rush & '12 E-tec for a good run. I was impressed with both rides' quality (that are 5 years newer) & was sure they were better in bumps, BUT there were alot of things that were not as good. Both guys got off my sled & thought it was a Caddilac compared to theirs. Mine pulls harder than both & they said mine felt safer & more stable especially at high speeds. At the end of 300 miles they are ALWAYS tired & i'm ALWAYS ready for more. Heck, I did 415 miles other day & alot of it was beat up. SOOOO no i don't want to give up my heavy Apex...

I put on the WRP 2inch plus seat on my 07 Attak GT this year."" WOW"" The seating position is so much better It's like I bought a new sled! I went up to Old Forge NY. last year to demo the Viper. Was not impressed. I do 100% of my riding on trail and the Attak has ""NEVER"" let me sit. I have many mods and upgrades, all thanks to TY."" 11,880 miles on""STOCK CLUTCH'S,FACTORY BELT and MOTOR""!!! Preseason maintenance 10,260 miles I took the clutch's to my dealer to get checked. The secondary needed a bushing that was it. First trip this year up to my cabin in potter co. I had code 84 come up, Adjusting the throttle cable cured it. I bought the sled as a leftover in 08 and took it off trail the first ride out on Tug Hill, I found out real fast this will be a ""TRAIL ONLY"" sled for me. I do all my own maintenance so the only guy I can bitch at if I breaks down is me. I do a yearly trip to Jackman Maine and ride deep up into the Allagash and sled problems for me are a non issue (knock on wood). If and when I get a new sled the Attak will be my spare, with the mileage and age of the sled won't get that much on a trade anyway here in Pa.

I think the biggest problem is people keep confusing the Apex (groomed trail sled) with Nytro or Viper Bump machines. There in lies the problem! The Apex is a awesome trail rider, excells and is so stable at high speed rail beds and pipeline/powerline trails. Handles well in the twisties and handles moderate bumps you find on groomed trails. Some chose the wrong machine!
What some people who complain the most want is a lightweight not so stable at speed big bump machine! Yamaha built first the Nytro which people complained about. Then they built the Viper which people seem to like but complain they want Apex like power. In fact most I have listened to complain that the Viper does not have the Nytros power!
Then there are the majority who love their Apex's just as they are, well maybe more power cause you just never have enough it seems. If Yamaha drops a Apex motor in a Viper it would interest me but its not a sled I would dump my Apex for. In 13 when I bought my Apex I could have went with a Cat turbo or a Doo 1200 but the refined super bike powered Apex is just to hard to resist. I knew what is was going in, I knew it was a groomed trail rider, I knew it is not a big bump ditch banger, I knew it was not a mountain sled but with the 144 I could venture off trail a bit. I knew it could handle 99% of bumps a groomed trail could throw at me, the rest I would slow down for!
It lived up to everything I expected! Maybe some people need to look at what they expect in a sled and buy accordingly! I know I have ridden with tons of Apex riders who love their sleds perhaps they bought accordingly as well! The Apex will be a tough act to follow. I have followed a lot of these so called hyper sleds from other brands and noticed that they are nervous twitchy things. Kind of like the difference between a sport bike and a cruiser.
I want my sled to be a cruiser! Sport bikes never really interested me. Question is I suppose Can you have both in one machine that keeps both parties happy?

Yes they are heavy but Apex's still get unstuck. They were breaking trail and a guy I know didn't take his APEX as he was worried it would get stuck and could not get it out. We were breaking trail and my APEX and a SKIDOO both got stuck Both got out. My nose was buried 3/4 in the snow. The boys pointed the skies to the trail about 5 feet away and said lean into the trail and give er. That's what I did and the APEX walked right out. I think the guy who didn't take the APEX didn't know how to drive.

Sasquatch has hit the nail on the head.... I don't see them putting the R1 in the Viper. It would throw the balance off and cost alot to retool to fit. They have 1000 cc now in 3 cyl. Why couldn't they modify it to get more HP ?

Well I'm hoping it's true. Just talked to three different dealers and they all said the same thing. New apex model next year with a Yamaha design, not a cat design. Will be very interesting to see if they put this motor in or one that's been waiting to go in. Yamaha knows those who ride the apex want long Cadillac style miles with big power. Now let's see if we get it

As the Apex motor is physicaly smaller weighs only 8pds more it could go in the Viper I don't think it would like the 180 bend in the pipe and would suffer from lack of exup and restrictive exaust. The Apex likes to breath. I think the very design of the Viper would work against it. Only way to really make more power (serious power) from the 3 is bore and stroke or turbo. IMHO

I just bought my 2007 Attak GT used from Pat's in the UP in mid Feb. It was a one owner rider that was super picky and kept it in great shape, always ridden in Northern Michigan and hauled in an enclosed trailer. The machine had 12,300+ miles. It looks as good as a friend with the same machine that has 2900 miles. It had the original belts, original bearings(repacked each year), fresh exhaust donuts and stock but never touched clutches. The rear wheels are also new but the shocks are original but still ride good. I just turned 13,000 on Sunday with it. Probably our last ride here with the warm weather now. I pulled the clutches and it probably will get buttons and a Secondary bushing. It does have a small groove in the primary sheave where the belt rides at engagement. Just for the sake of it I plan to change the normal bearings like the drive shaft one, jackshaft bearing, I will pull skid and refresh all the shocks. I want to put a better track on it either a Cobra or a Ripsaw II. When I do that I will inspect the chain case chain, sprockets and bearings. This thing has plenty of life left in it. I paid $4,000 for it.
Oh another thing I really like. The guy was my same build at 6'1" 200lbs. He added a 1 inch riser and added a couple inches of foam to the seat at a professional shop. I really like the added height and it seems better for standing when I need to.

Was considering a new 2015 from a different manf but there is NOTHING out there that compares to my APEX motor and power steering. Hoping the APEX replacement has them both. With some personal adjustments on the rear skid my '11 Se suits me fine for the long Canada trials I ride. Would like a few more ponies to be competitive with the Turbo kitty cats and a larger gas tank though.
