I overheated my apex last spring, lost compression in two cylinders, and had oil leaking from mag side, wondering if I need to pull the motor in order to remove head and do some digging around in the engine.

No you can leave the motor bolted in the sled, but 20 min more and it will be on the ground. You do have to take the delta box off to get the head off - so there's a lot of the sled to come apart

Removed my engine without taking out the delta box out just a lot of wiggling.

He asked about taking the head off without removing motor - I don't think it can be done without removing delta box - and removing it isn't that big of deal. Last motor I did I had on the floor in in an hour and a half.

Pulled the engine earlier, not sure how you could get it out that fast, took about two and a half hours for me. The parts circled in red were leaking oil before I pulled it out when the engine was running, the spark plug caps were melted into the head. Before I dig any further into it, what should I expect will need to be replaced inside.

All gaskets and seals for one, Rings for sure pistons maybe, all bearings are possible. Ah hell just about everything for a complete rebuild. When a motor gets that hot that the plug boots melt and the seals leak it needs to come all apart anyway. The rings will have lost temper and be mechanics wire now. The oil may have burnt and therefore wiped the bearings and piston pins. Pistons may be scuffed and need replacing because the oil may have not been lubing them. Hell they may have melted around the rings hence loss of compression. Its that loss of compression that points to rings/pins/pistons with that much heat the oil could have coked!
Or maybe you got lucky and just need rings and a gasket seal kit. Now if you get into the motor that far its hard to put things back together with old parts. Not sure what a engine rebuild is worth on these engines.

I would get a good used motor for it every time i try to rebuild a overheated motor it seems like inm sped more time and money then its worth so many parts that can be effected by the heat and are hard to detect. just my own exp. for what its worth.

I had a customer that had the same thing happen to his apex. It was cheaper for me to just install another used engine versus the time and parts to rebuild his toasted motor. If interested in a used motor send me a PM, I have several of them in stock.

I think that I would opt for a used motor, probably more expensive to rebuild it. Then you will have all kinds of spare parts that you can sell or save for just in case.

One other thing I forgot to mention is the valves. Very possible it could have burnt up a couple exhaust valves as a you got lucky scenario or just add them to the list along with the cam bearings.

Pulled off the head and magneto cover out of curiousity, the pistons appear fine, crosshatching looks mint in all cylinders. Cam bearings felt fine and camshafts looked brand new as well with no scuffing anywhere. Not bad for 5k miles. Put a straightedge on head, no noticeable warpage. Is it normal to see oil in the flywheel area?

Forgot to mention, I pulled a total of 3.5 qts of oil out of the system and motor. The rest leaked out of the screw in plug that covers the magneto bolt.

If there is no coolant in system the temp sensor does not inform the ecu that it's overheating. My guess is motor lost coolant. We have been working on a product to address this but have run into a few set backs. Do a search for "engine saver"
