Well it looks like there will not be enough snow in the U.P. Newyears eve weekend for riding..
So, we (3 of my friends and i) are going to Laramie wyoming to go riding for 8 days.. (unless the U.P. gets dumped on)
What can i do to the sled to make it run its best in the 8000-10,000 alt..?
Can i just ride it as is.. or do i need to make some secondary clutch adjustments?
(before you ask... NO i wont rent a sled)
Any help would be appreciated..
Brian

Taking a shorty out west? Might be an adventure. Bring your big boy pants so you can pull it out when you get stuck, or keep it pinned and don't get stuck

they have 250miles of groomed trails..
We will do some playing off trail.. (im not a hill climber by any means)
Glad to hear the stock settings will work.. My buddy is going to change weights on his Zr900 for the trip..

Your sleds gonna underv huge; especially in powder. Lighten the primary by at least 6 -8 grams or run a real shallow helix.

Turk would it help at all to adjusting just the secondary? ( i dont want to spend a ton of money on clutching for 1 week of riding)

Your gonna be lucky to hit 8400 rpm up there in deep snow. Tuning with the secondary with stock components won,t help. If you want to do this on the cheap get a strate 45,43 or 41 degree helix & run that. The shallower the better. Your gonna overrev down low but once up high & in the powder it will work vastly better. Also if you can get an o-p-o primary spring that will help too.

Like i said.. we will be doing MOSTLY trail riding... with about 10% off trail..
would adding the shallower helix adversly affect the trail riding?

You say 90% trail/10%powder- I say 25% trail to get to the play fields. It is differfent out there , you dont measure your day by miles but by elevation. Not to mention that quick foot of fluffies they got the night before on the trail. You don't need to spend a ton of dough to get it good, just need to find out what will work. You dont need perfection , just ridabuility.(did I spell that right?) I suspect that after all that SNOW they got in Colarada today, that there might be a lot of us east of the M-I-SS lookin to go west, cuase ther aint nothen in the mid west , quebec, new england,or ontario
Perhaps we could come up with some short$ setups for us that are serious about going west

My friend has been there before.. he said they have 250 miles of groomed trails..
I just want it RIDEABLE.. 150hp at that elevation is only about 110hp at best..

I took my 06 attak to Laramie last year. We rode 80% off trail and 20% trail . I replaced the rivets in the secondary . It was very easy and fairly inexpensive.

Get some wide skis on her so you will have the floatation half the battle right there. My son followed me on my mountian sled with his mothers 121 RX-1 in 4 feet of powder and never got stuck once. Pick your places to stop like at the top of hill not the bottom. Follow other tracks and keep her pinned. Lots of fun really.

I'm going to Island Park the middle of January. I'm changing weights in the primary and dropping from the stock 23T top gear to a 21T top gear. Talked to my dealer (Jerry Fix) for about an hour the other day. I did not want to spend the cash to drop a gear but after his reasons and calling two Yamaha dealers in Island Park I'm going to change the gear. I plan on going out west a couple more times this year so I can leave the smaller gear in for around here (if it actually snows). All three dealers said without dropping the gear it will be junk in powder and anything steep. All three also said if I don't drop a gear I should bring extra belts because it will be burning them off at a regular basis. If you are only going to ride trails and don't mind shoveling you sled out ALOT when you go off trail then just change the weights in your primary. I figure I'm already at a disadvantage with a 136" track and a crappy 1-1/4" ripsaw (terrible in powder) that I don't need any other handicaps. HAVE FUN...I know I am

You lose 3% of your hp for every 1000 ft of elevation. Most of the riding in the snowy range is done at 10,000ft. Your 150hp GT will have around 105 out there. If you want it to run properly, you definitely need lighter weights and helix change. I know you mentioned that you will ride the trails mostly, but you will be off trail alot more than you think.
Weltracer, I live about 35 miles from you and go to Wyoming 1-2 times per year for the last 20 years. You will love it, but the trails in the snowy range are only average at best. If you want a real treat, go 6 hours further to Togwotee Mountain Lodge. The trails out there are unbeleivable. 3x the trail system that the snowy's have.

Where are you staying?
We'll be up there the 26th-28th and the night of the 30th - New Years Day.
I think we are riding down to Albany for dinner on the 27th, and maybe for the fireworks on New Years Eve.
