loose tracks will balloon in front of the skid suspension as the track goes around the front drive axle. tracks will stretch as you drive on them as well. if you drive with a loose track it has a good chance of folding over on itself and breaking in half. you can see it happen on youtube when people are radar running on the lake. Can someone please explain where the track balloons and under what condition (s) it does that?
I don't run my track that loose, just loose.

One man's loose is another man's tight. It's all in the size of each man's wrench. Lol! Less friction is faster, as long as your track doesn't ratchet on acceleration with 100% traction. (Assuming that 100% traction is possible) Free rolling may be more important than a specific tension.

Track lug height is ?
02ViperMody44, i believe your stock track is 1.25 on a xtx .
Studs > no studs. /// Yamaha gives you this scale measure with no studs.(rotating mass)
My track is on the looser side \ my 2 finger slightly snug\
I spend 85% under 80mph , looser the better for me.
Tighter or looser you still should be kicking your buddys Axys #*$&@ !

I've been gone from the forum for a couple of days. I see that for Top End the majority say tighter. I hung 20#'s on my track and measured and saw that I had a hang of 2.1", so I snugged her up to apprx. 1.43"(digital caliper!) and have yet to run her on some nice packed lake ice, due to the recent snow fall. But as soon as I find the right spot to "test-her", I'll report back. Besides my buddy is bragging how his Axys is NOW broken in, 16 hours or something later, and wants to try her back out!

Good. Depending on the size lake, mark off a mile or 2 and see if that Axys can hang with Apex . Start to Finish !!!
I know that's a run but 2-smokes will not win .!

I don't do many top speed runs, but I like it where I can push the track off the front of the slides without too much pressure.....it never ratchets so it seems ok....and I like that I can roll backwards at stops on hills. I adjust the side to side by the third wheel..equal clearance on each side of the third axle wheel.
You can see the ballooning on a jack stand..the track will really stretch out at high speed.
I know on grass, tight is not good..way too much drag without extra wheels. Then, it's loose but if it ratchets, I tighten a little til it doesn't. But that's only 500 feet.

When the track is loose, it balloons mainly on the top of the suspension as well as in the front where it curves downward. Anyway, I have always set my tension so the track has a free hang of about 5/8" of an inch measured from the track to the bottom of the hyfax when the track has been warmed up. Track adjustment has a huge impact on top end performance

Is this the ape xtx 2013 w/esup and ps? If so the gps to speedo is very close,my 2015 ape xtx yesterday ran 109 speedo and gps was 105 on groomed trail, sled now has 577 miles all stock bare track, and just gets to 10,500 but not any higher, and my track was fairly lose too,so we just took it in one full turn, and iwas much better,it should not ratchet as it has anti rachet drivers on it.Alright, not as basic a question as it may seem, but when pulling on your track to measure track tension, with a spring scale, is it 22lbs on EACH side, or is it 22lbs across the entire track. I've seen on here where people put 20lbs on the center of the track(thus distributing the weight across both sides evenly=10lbs per side) and measure, but looking at the manual, it looks like they are applying a spring scale to either side in a track window of the recommended 22lbs, to measure deflection. Would I need 44lbs in/on the track then? I ask, as I believe I am running my track a little too loose and it is costing me some top end, from perhaps rubbing on the tunnel protectors. I did tighten it up a little and noticed on the lake that I gained a couple of mph. Best I could get on a long haul was 109mph. Just want to keep embarrassing my buddies new 800 Axys.
Thanks
Rick
