APEX " Y " PIPES BREAKING & UNAVAILABLE

I just changed my donuts today on my attak got 4000 miles on it. When starting cold you could hear a exhaust leak kind of a flutter sound coming from the tunnel. All the clamps were loose and 1 donut was worn flat on the bottom. Had one bolt round out that holds the y pipes in place that really sucked. But got her all back together and it sounds nice and quiet again. Kind of a pain in the but though.

ReX you need to add exhaust valve beakage, jackshaft mount failure, and chaincase oil leakage, to that 800xp list.

Man, you guys really do want to beat up on the REV-XPs...

I've never heard of any of those issues with the XP800, but I don't read dootalk. All I know is what my buddies are seeing with their REV-XPs as well as what my buddies were seeing with their Apex ERs.

1 broken driveshaft and weak brakes on one sled (because of the anti-rattle clip pushing the pads back) are the two major issues they've had in a total of about 11,000 miles (two sleds, I don't know how many miles are on the third REV-XP). They are also going through belts roughly every 3000 miles, both had their exhaust manifold bolts loosen off and both are burning a ton of oil (about 50:1). They also both rerouted/shortened their oil and coolant hoses because they were rubbing on the jackshaft. These sleds have been ridden hard too. Oh, forgot, they've also both just needed a pair of inner idler wheels (same location that the Apex has trouble with). They haven't replaced the wheels yet, but the rubber is starting to chunk away.

Looking at two in the group on Apexs (one has his Apex up for sale and now has almost 4000 miles on the REV-XP) with about the same number of miles had lots of trouble with them including 4+ chaincase leaks, 2 chains, 1 upper gear, many sets of donuts, 3 sets of y-pipes, many idler wheels, 3 sets of cracked rails (2 sets on one, 1 on the other), 8 broken front pivot arms (5 on one, 3 on the other), 3 broken rear pivot arms (2 on one, 1 on the other), 1 broken rear swing arm (between rails and rear pivot arm), 3 broken weight transfer rods, 3 radiators (broken mounts), 2 shock rebuilds, 2 heavy duty skid spring, 2 seized steering bushings, 2 sets of worn front end bushings, 2 sets of skis (didn't fail, just wanted to upgrade), etc. There is no question that with the way these guys ride, the REV-XPs have had fewer break downs.

I still love my Apex and would not trade it for a REV-XP, but lets get real - it is because of the extremely nice engine in the Apex, not because the REV-XPs fall apart. If you ride an 06/07 Apex hard and for high miles, durability is simply not there. Yamaha is slowly improving the weaknesses, but they still have a way to go.

Now, if it wasn't for the donuts/y-pipes, I think my 07 RTX is finally updated to the point where it should be very durable (once I get the new radiator installed), but I had to do a lot of work to get it there and a lot of work to get it to ride as well as a REV-XP MXZ X. Mine has been overall quite a bit better for durability than the 06 Apex ERs too.

Next season, I will the the only one left in the core group I ride with on an Apex. Everyone else will be on a REV-XP or a REV. Two Apex were already replaced this season and there is only one left other than mine. One was actually replaced because of the almost 2 month back-order time, waiting for new y-pipes. In January, about 3 days after the dealer told him his Apex wouldn't be back together until March, he went out and bought the REV-XP.

One my buds with the 800xp,who rides hard like I do, had so many break downs this year,ski-doo is taking the sled back at the end of the season, and is giving him a new one,and sending his to Canada. The sled is literally falling apart. He has ridden revs and zx chassis, and never had any problems with chassis before, which is impressive. He doesn't jump or do off trail or anything like that ,just trail,at high speeds. What's even more alarming is the fact the trails here in wisconsin and the UP have been the smoothest we have ever seen in years and can't imagine what rough trails would have done to it.
As far as my apex,@ 9000mi I had the y pipe fail, I welded it.No big deal. I'll get new ones under YES when they're availible. It sucks but Yamaha is tring to do something about it. The radiator tabs broke, ziptied it,held for the entire season. Will replace under warranty this summer. The wheel tab rail mounts started to crack, fixed with two bolt mounts. these are the only issue I had this year in the 4500mi I put on. Last year,in 3500mi. the only issues I had where chain case cover(replaced under warranty) and rail caps (lost one,now bolted from the bottom probelm solved). It would be nice if nothing would have broke in 9000mi ,but I'm not complaining. The sled has never left me stranded, and always been turn key and go. The guy with the xp has been stranded 3 times this year, and that's why I'm a little critical on the XP.

I drilled out the rivets and used stainless machine screws and nylon type lock nut and cut small stainless plates on each side and filled them up with SILICONE before installing and wipe off excess when done and they will never loosen.

I did the same thing.. and they came loose again..

THe holes in the rails are now oblonged..

There's usually enough room to drill a new hole, I know on my '05 I had the same problem...siliconed and re-fastened, I actually installed 2 bolts per cap...it doesn't have to be that big of a fastener to do the job, the SILICONE realy does the trick it absorbs a lot of the vibrations and keeps it from coming loose!

"SJ" I traded my '05 in on my '08 and didn't get time to do my '08 yet...the season is nearing the end I think anyways, where getting dumped on here today by tommorow afternoon we're expecting 50 to 60cm thats 18" to 24" WOW! let it snow

I was out today here are a few pic's

I'd love to load up ....holy cow (india)...lucky dogs...enjoy it cuz it's supposed to be warm next week...

Come on down, you're not that far, its all highway to get up here (OTTAWA) they're forecasting below freezing for the next 2 weeks, another system moving in for Wednesday, we're on the verge of beating the old snow fall record of 1971...LET IT SNOW!!! :-o

apex exhaust

hey 55cm in renfrew and more to come cant wait til the groomers hit the trails.my wife is a teacher on march break i have a feeling she will be watching my shop for a few days this week.oh yeah i run an 06 apex gt did the xhaust 3 weeks ago one ypipe broken had one from a buddy made one good one from two replace the donuts.also found the two into one ypipe on muffler end cracked at all the welds had to weld that as well people may want to check this as well as i have seen this several times as well.2800 miles on my sled and this summer my list of todo is pretty long new skid for the rear as i ave already had to weld both h arms replace all wheel bearing and rear three idlers my steering is so sloppy you would think it was 20 years old im going to get brass steering bushings with gease zercs machined for it.and the front end needs every bushing replaced as well.but the good this machine starts and runs like no other its exceptionally fast i got the good one off the aasembly line i run with an rtx an attack and another gt and they are not even close my best on the speedo is 133mph im going to put my gps and see how close it is and i have line up against zrt 800 an 800 custom polaris iq and a doo 800 and its not even a race.in the end im very happy with my machine i will never go back to 2 stroke the peace of mind knowning that i can hold it to the pin for miles on end without replaceing pistons is worth the other headaches.here is my solution to yhe problems yamaha has suspension find the brand that works the best find a usrd one fab it in the rear.a arm problems put the sintered bushings in it.etc if its a a common problem having yamaha put the same #*$&@ back in isnt going to fix the problem.post what works better and use it.thats what i do.just my two cents though.
