BACK FIRING BEWARE

Carb'd Vector is a smaller engine so better gas mileage is expected.
true but the old carb vector is also faster and starts easier. bone stock all my Viper will do is 82-84 mph clutching way off stock, starts lousy and on the stand its very hard to rotate track , vector spins round easy .....lots of drag on Viper suspension and drive line

The best I ever saw on my old 2005 Vector was 108 mph on the meter. It definitely had a better top number than my 15 Viper but the Viper has better low and mid range torque. My Nytro and Viper both run about the same top number (98mph) although the Nytro seems to have better throttle response and without a doubt starts much better than the Viper. The Viper's top speed also seems to be effected more by snow conditions than my other Yamaha sleds which may be the Ripsaw II factoring in.

Last Thursday while attempting to start my 2015 XTX I heard a loud bang like a gun shot. This caused all the neighbors to look and see if there was gunfire. Left it and used my back up sled for the remainder of the trip.

When I did attempted to fire the sled back up on Friday to move it in the trailer (much warmer out) it took a couple of long cranks to finally get it going. Pulling the body panel I noticed the rivets were stressed on the muffler and exhaust was leaking out along the whole seam.

The sled has been dropped off at the new dealer near me to assess the damage.

Prior to this season I have never had an issue starting this sled but was told in the fall of 2017 I had to get the latest flash or I would lose my warranty. I sure hope Yamaha does not fight this as it is abundantly clear the latest flash has caused this issue. I also do not feel I should have to pay a deductible on an issue created by the manufacturer from a modification they made after the initial delivery....

Thank you for that tip. This dealer is new to Yamaha so they are looking at Yamaha to guide their every move. I updated my post with a photo of the rivets.

I have a backfiring issue with my 14 XTX. I bought it in Nov and have only put 600miles in it. It doesn' backfire on start up but it back fires EVERY time on deceleration. If I run 35mph or faster and then decrease throttle coming downhill or to a stop it'l pop several times. It starts really hard and I have a brand new agm battery. Any one know what this could be? Muffler looks to be in great shape. However it is much louder than the other vipers I have heard around.

You may want to check your exhaust header for leaks. The welds are known to crack.

So those that have had the backfire and muffler blown apart, what solution did they have for the cause of the backfire?
My is in the shop still and the muffler will be replaced, however that will not solve that this could happen again, likely after my warranty is gone.

Yea I’m in the same boat. They have no fix or intelligent response on what they are going to do to fix the actual problem.
What’s funny is that a rep said...
Would you rather blow your starter and associated chain case parts on a kickback on a trip or just replace a muffler.
I’m on my second muffler and other parts from the blowouts and I have a sled that is useless in the conditions I ride in so.... good luck.

You guys notice it only does it when warm?
The starting backfire I had was maybe zero/sub zero morning in Munising.
My sled has always had a backfire when coming to a slowdown after a grade, despite slowing down long before stopping.

I have a PCV and with stock can on the factory tune is rich at start.10:1.

On mine they just replaced the muffler. They claim the new muffler is improved, lol
