I come from the racing side of things and my thoughts are if they make it mandatory to race where everyone is going the same way with as much safety as possible on the track and around it
why the hell would i NOT wear safety gear in an uncontrolled enviornment where u have 2 way traffic, tighter areas imovable objects( trees etc) drunks, and other factors, i actually wear more safety gear trail riding than when racing.

Sad story and completely unnecessary. I rode for years without a helmet (just a fur hat and goggles/ legal where I live) on our et410 until I got the handlebars in the chin during a white-out. Once was enough. Now its tech vest and helmet always. Heard of a guy whose throttle stuck while loading his sled onto a clamshell style trailer. Trailer edge peeled back his scalp.
Lots of great protective gear from the atv and dirt bike side of things. On my yfz, its riding boots, shin/knee pads and an alpine star armoured jacket.

I came across an accident once where there was a head on crAsh and one guy was killed. Very eerie feeling coming over a crest of a hill and there is a dead guy lying in the middle of the trail.
The sad part is these accidents are preventable.

So true but Untill a 1 way trail system is utilized there will always be a danger from some nutcase out on the trail.RX1MPete said:The sad part is these accidents are preventable.

I use the new EVS vests they have more range of motion than the tekvest IMO and are cheaper price wise

Most of the protective gear we use for snowmobiling (other than helmets) is for street bike or motocross use. It fits very well under the jacket and pants, without being bulky.

This whole situation is just horrible
Just wondering. Did you file any report on what you saw?
I'm not trying to sound like I am picking on you at aii
I'm just thinking about the innocent people that were injured.
They will probably endure a lengthy recovery process and who knows maybe never recover fully.
Just hoping you filed something so that when they sue this clown ther get taken care of fairly and he can't lie his way out of it

Well said RTX...
He should be nailed to the fullest...
The people he hit probably will never sled again because of an idiot..
Few years back in central Ontario 2 street bikes came right up my rear end, lots of turns and hills on this road so when it was safe I let them go by, a km down the road the guy in front went over a hill at high speeds not knowing that there was a sharp bend over the hill, he ended up hitting the front end of a mini van and was dead by the time we got there..
It sure leaves a bad feeling in you..

First day I go my tekvest I hit a rock on my Phazer and got the handlebar end in the solar plexus. It bruised and hit like hell for a few days but I can't imagine the damage it could have caused. I wear a motocross helmet, vest, snowboard crash pads for hips and bum and plastic cup skateboard knee/shin pads. I drive slowly on turns and hills because I've seen too many drunk guys out there and idiots stopped two abreast in the worst possible places. Be careful out there, everyone! Suit up and always expect the worst when on groomed trails.

This is something to remember for those of us who like to take it up a notch a night. Just cause you can't see lights coming doesn't mean there isn't unseen hazards on trail..

Yesterday on Tug Hill on a trail literally 20' wide, on a minor curve, some loser coming at me is going so fast and out of control that he comes all the way over to MY edge of the trail. I had to jump the bank to avoid getting hit. Fortunately it was a swampy area, not tree filled.
Why do these people imagine they are on the last lap of a World Championship race?

Thats terrible. Accidents are always terrible but when innocent people get hurt because of other peoples stupidity, it's even worse.

We came over a hill today to a 90 degree turn 2 of us both thought of gunning it because it was an open field before this setup on the trail. Glad we didn't because the 90 turn was surrounded by 6 foot ditch. We had lunch and on our way back came across a group of 8 sleds or so towing a burnt sled out of that very ditch. Guy must have gunned it and missed. They gave us the thumbs up to say was all OK just glad no one got hurt today. The sled was unrecognizable and had caught fire.... Very surprised guy was OK.

Blue Dave said:I do not feel safe coming around a blind corner or cresting a hill until night time when I can see the oncoming headlights.
this is why we only ride at night, which does get old, but at least u know whats coming. During the day I feel like a target on an artillery range.
