According to the manual the belt should not sit more than .5 mm below the top of the primary clutch. Mine is sitting almost 2mm down, but I have only 500km on the belt .It was replaced when the dealer did the reverse update.
My question is; does the reverse update change where the belt should sit or should I still consider adding shims to the adjuster screws. If I do add the shims ,how much should I add and will they effect the reverse .
thanks in advance
Pete in Alberta . ;)!

You would remove shim width from the secondary to get a higher belt hieght but you are correct in thinking about the reverse update which lowered the belt hieght for more belt deflection and less drag on motor.I dont know what the specs are for the reverse update.

I love the Phazer, but Yamaha should be embarassed to call the reverse update a fix to an obvious oop's by their engineers in the first place. You cant decrease performance ( which lowering the belt in the secondary will do) and call the problem fixed. Im still waiting for Yamaha to send out a bulletin to repair the reverse properly.

maybe he set it up the correct way...set deflection first....all belts are not the same...

I'm a bit confused then , the manual suggest you add shims to raise the belt height , and yes if the revrerse update means loss of performance then tat is not a fix ,that's anon the trail emergency repair to get you by

so i did remove one shim from the secondary but the belt actually dropped lower , any ideas what i did wrong. there were 3 shims in there at 40 thou each

Thats impossible unless you removed the wrong shims (shims are in between the two sheaves)or when you took apart the secondary you didnt index it correctly. You marked the holes spring was in and gave it one twist(so pressure forces the helix up against the buttons?Stock shim is 1mm(.040in) and there is only 1 shim. You also have to run it to check hieght so belt finds its place.

I removed the right shim and yes there were actually 3 in there ( reverse update? ) I think my problem is no preload on the spring . any suggestions as to how to do that. when I run it up the belt drops in but the clutch holds it in at idle :o|

so wait what im confussed here. I have an 08 (soit has the updated belt), should I make it to be above the sheave or keep it below the sheave.

well its riding up top where it should be but there is no reverse now :o| :o| :o| :o|

put one shim back ,got the belt riding basically flush at the top of the clutch. the reverse works fine too so thanks cannondale for all the help , much appreciated ;)! :rocks:

No problem I think. It seems that with the newer belt it must be run below or just about even with the edge of the edge of the secondary sheave.Even on mine which doesnt have reverse when I used the newer belt I had to both shim the secondary till belt is even AND add wieght to primary to get the revs down where they belong.I am going to try to find the original belt which my sled came with since this doesnt make sense and I would think it would affect lowend since the higher the belt on secondary the lower your effective gearing is.All because of defective reverse.Just doesnt make sense to do this but I dont even think the original belts are available anymore.

Here is more info and belt #'s
