Bender II not running correctly.

Man that sucks! How did it go? Long pass? How much boost? Where you having litle black crap in your coolant?

Rocked until I blew a head gasket.... :o|

Tear down this week and hope to have it ready before we leave north on Monday.

Sorry to hear that. What boost was this at and how many headgaskets? Sounds like this could be a hard lesson about octane booster..

T

Two head gaskets, copper coated all surfaces and hardened stud bolts. 93 octane at 10lbs of boost. I hit 10lbs maybe 4-5 times all day, nothing over 1000-1500' runs at a time. (trail riding)

Sled mid day Friday started loosing power. Temps were at 40 deg. Engine temp right on, a/f right on. But at one point it wouldnt get over 6lbs of boost. Then got better.Just figured the filter on the turbo had slushed up. (guessing it was the bulk of the coolant leaving the system.

Anyway Sunday went to the ice drags Sled didnt want to start, when it finally did it ran like it was on 2 cylinders. Just die when trying to ideal. If I held the gas it come out of it. It was 2deg out and figured it was froze up. Coolant was low, so I added coolant and it immediately came out the exhaust. Shut it down and brought it home. There is alot of oil build up on the exhaust and coolant.

Tear down will start Tuesday, I hope to have it back together Wed. One gasket and a shim this time. Not two gaskets. Also my hardened stud bolts are getting seated, and not hand screwed in, no matter what anyone says. :tg:

Good luck buddy, just when you seat the studs it is just a extra load on the threads in the block. (dont pull them out) I would go with one head gasket and race fuel.

I dont want to carry a week of race fuel with me next week on our back pack trip. I will just have to turn down the boost. 1 turn after hand tight is all I am planning.

I turned it up to 12lbs a couple weeks ago while trying to get the carbs figured out....at 93 octane. I think that might have started the problem. :tg:

Man i dont know i ran 12+ psi with 93oct for 3,000+ miles!!! Then mine went.

Hope you can get her up and running soon, crap when that happen, been there too running 3 gaskets stacked, didn't get too many miles either before she blew the gasket. I'm running 2 gaskets now, still running strong. 11/15 lbs for low/high boost settings. I do have 10:1 pistons installed as well.

Tore it down this morning. Head it off. Just me started at 3:30 a.m. and head was off at 6:15 a.m.

Didnt see any thing wrong with the gaskets, but did have two stud bolts that were looser then the others. Didnt need hardly any torque to remove.

I am going to set my studs at 5ftlbs and try again.

you can't see where the af was getting past. Paul

No signs on the outside surfaces. I didnt pull the gaskets apart.

Get home and help me get this put back together! ;)!

Did you figure where the coolant entered the exhaust system and got blown out the exhaust pipe? Man I hope your head is still in one solid piece. Happy rebuilding.

BTW - we're nearly finished on my friends Apex, cracked flex-pipe exhaust header on his MCX-turboed APEX. We also had to replace the speedo side drive axel bearing on my turboed RX-1. Man the downtime sucks big time.

I had my dad (motor builder) over last night looking it over. He said the double head gasket never seal from the get go.

Between the double gasket, the finger tight studs this thing didnt work.

Checked the head over for any cracks..nothing. Checked the head for straightness and it was fine. So I tore a new head gasket apart. Replaced the middle with an aluminum spacer plate. The spacer plate was coated with gasket making bond and the two outside areas of the original gasket was copper coated with 3 coats. I also set the studs into place with about 5lbs of torque. Everything went together really well and tight.

I had one incident that I had to wait for maxdlx to bring over his magnet. I dropped a socket head down inside were the timing chain goes... :o| Started assembly at around 4:00 last night and finished with cams in and timed at 8:00. (lost about 1-1/2 hrs waiting for a magnet, cus paul was out of town.

I found the nut on my jack shaft loose. I need to tighten that much more then orginally.

Good luck with it this time! Hope you get way more time out of her than the frist!

Im ready to turn the key. Just filled up the fluid and walked away from it. I figured then I will go back and look it over before I turn the key.

Plus maxdlx is on his way over....I will let you all know how it sounds. :drink:

Well it runs. But my high dollar plugs are wet, so I used my old set and they dont want to work either. :o|

So off to town for new plugs.

Sled overheated right off the bat. I am pretty sure it was an air pocket. I release presure in the rear and the temp dropped. It has alot of black stuff floating, so I plan on draining it and refill with new.

to be continued...
