broke the secondary shaft on my 07 phazer FX at the end of last winter. Has anyone else encountered this and how can I get a reliable (whole) assembly without breaking the bank.. any input would be appreciated.
As for how to go on from here, I would probably just replace the jackshaft itself. The reverse gearbox is not as complex as it may seem, you basically need an Allen wrench and snap ring pliers to disassemble it, and ideally a good camera to take pics as you go (so you can see how things were if you don't remember). I have seen several entire reverse gearbox/jackshaft assemblies for sale, but they're all used and you'd be getting another used component with an unknown history.
If I remember correctly, a new jackshaft is around $215 from Yamaha, but I'd also replace the gasket (between the gearbox halves) and some of the bearings in the gearbox, which would add to the cost. This would also be a good time to replace the oil feed pipe/grommet that has caused many others to leak chaincase oil periodically on the '07 models. And since you'd have to remove the exhaust to get the gearbox out, it would be a good time to check/replace the exhaust donuts as well. I'm glad I checked mine this summer, one of the clamps was completely off the pipe! Anyway, here's a few links describing the reverse gearbox and chaincase oil leak issues:
I have good low mileage jackshafts and rev gear box assemblies. Could sell whole assembly if you don't want to take the gear box apart. Send me a pm if interested.
