According to Yanaha, the old tensioner cannot be bench tested. The only way to tell if it is bad is to wait until it happens.

You are right no way to tell or test ....only thing is the chain may get louder ....didn't want to push it parts to fix it where about 250...new eng. 4500 and up

I've done several of these replacements also and don't believe it's a bad job either. The hardest part is getting the two bolts that hold the tensioner in place out and then back in. If you know what to listen for you can hear a chain rattle when the tensioner is failing. I've heard a couple engines with chain noise and after replacing the tensioner the noise disappears. I've also taken the old tensioners apart, including one that was making noise to try determine what the problem was. I couldn't find anything visually wrong with any of them. The problem may be with the spring being used.

grizztracks, is the tensioner hydrolically operated? Like a lifter on a car?

I purchased a 06 nytro this summer that has the stock tensinor in it. I guess its wicked rare for the tensinors to stop working in them I asked my local dealer, I have put 450 miles on my sled this winter and It is still running awesome! sled has 4500 miles now. I might have my dealer replace it this spring, He told me not to worry about it too much.

That don't worry about it too much had me way too scared to lose a perfectly good running motor for a $135 part! Mine had almost 6000 miles on it before I could hear the chain starting to rattle on the right side of the motor! After changing it out the rattle was go and peace of mind was had!

That's what they all say ....parts are cheap eng. Are not

I am this spring, and parts to get mine fixed isn't cheap its going to be 500 bucks with labor. Cheaper than a motor but I ain't the type of fella to be pulling out 100s out of my wallet. We will see.

I just spent 1500 replacing tensioner and stator

If my dealer said not to worry about it, i would ask him to state that in writing.
