can a dealer refuse to do warranty work?

I bought my 06 apex from troy city garage in new york.
While riding in maine i had an issue with the tps.
I brought the sled to richards yamaha in lincoln maine while it was still under yes warranty.
I was told by the owner of richards yamaha that they would not service the sled unless i bought it from them. Period.
The guy could not have been more of an ignorant asshole if he tried to be.
I called yamaha to file a formal complaint but after getting the runaround on the phone with yamaha it became obvious to me that yamaha did not care either.
I filed the complaint but im sure nothing ever came of it

my suggestion to you would be, if you find a good dealer stick with them untill they give you a good reason to leave.
and if you find a shitty dealer avoid them like the plague

That is very odd to hear. I bought my 2009 nytro xtx from Richards for 5k out the door with less the 500 miles on it this last year. They have always treated my dad well he has just recently bought a cat touring sled and a SxS from him. I do know they are very cut and dry and I think it's one of those things where you have to gradually build a relationship. Sorry to hear you had that experience.

This is order time for dealers. Not making excuses for the dealer but I bet he was ticked at Cat for some reason. Or he has enough parts and accessories which is how the dealers get paid for warranty work. Most all cat rates for warranty are very fair to the dealer and if he has good people working they can make $ on warranty work. Hope you find a good dealer. I think the other one is going to be in trouble or was already.

Oh I agree. We spent alot of time on Lake Wanapitei.
My old stopping ground from Val Caron originally! spent a tonne of time on Wanapaitei! Beautiful area!!! Love the sledding trails in that area!(highways)

Unfortunately I think he has the right to refuse service to anybody, warranty work or not. It is stupid business practice but it is his shop and he can't be forced to work on a customers vehicles if he doesn't want to. I can see if he services HIS customer first, then other customers, but to refuse service because of where it was bought is bad business.
I would not go back to dealer like that.

I am not sure Cat or Yamaha will allow a dealer to refuse warranty work, Cannondale?

Well this is 2015/2016 and most dealers these days can't survive 1 terrible season at least in MI.
with that said being that Iam retired and I would set my FAT #*$&@ in a folding chair with a nice little hand held sign right by his entrance saying what you think and Iam sure on a couple SATURDAYS in Oct/Nov/DEC you could really affect his cash register.
And might get a chair or 2 popp up next to you as you ain't the only 1 treated like that. It would be it to me, some people CRY about things and some people do something about it, But that's just my dumb #*$&@ way of thinking!!!!!

Not sure. We never did that since we always made $ on warranty at least after the first job or two while mechanics figured out best way to do it.

We moved a little west of espanola on the Spanish river beautiful spot[/QUOTE]

Spanish River, WOW, not sure if you've ridden much in that area but your a hop and a skip to Elliot lake and from there the trails north south east west are spectacular !!!! If your into a little adventure you should ride the wilderness trail north out from tunnel lake trading post to Aubrey falls, VERY scienic.
