Hot start flash service bulletin

Well my 14 has been turboed since day 1 and has never had an issue and I did not get the re-flash on it. My 15 I bought late into the se3ason last spring and is setup with te 15 programming and definitely has a kick back issue. I am hoping the installation of the turbo is going to alleviate that.

I have no doubt at all that the 2015 update flash is the cause of all the starter issues. The random kickbacks will take teeth out at sooner than later. I would rather have a random long crank hot start that a random kickback that wrecks the starter. Both my sleds have the kickback now and one of them has taken the starter out.

If I was in your shoes I would wait to see how the 2016 update flash works out before having it done.

Curious if you had both your Vipers flashed at the same time?

On your 15 if you hold the starter until it is running and just a second more does it still kick back? Reason I ask is I always start everything that way as a habit left over from my race car days and was wondering if that is why I have never had the kick back?

Well that would be fine but it does not always start on the 1st try and it sometime does it at the first turn of the key. Friday I was loading it onto Allen Ulmer's trailer and it did it 2 times.

Then my theory of holding starter till running is wrong. Have you asked a dealer if a reflash of that sled is possible?

Its not wrong I think several types of kick backs are occurring. mine is when I first hit the key it bobbles but does not start. Like firing on 1 cylinder even with the key held on it rolls the motor backwards hitting the starter gear. I have not done anything yet cause I want to see what happens after the turbo is installed. It has the current ecm program on it cause its a late production 15.

Yep, both flashed at the same time and both now will randomly kickback. Really takes a lot of the fun out of a sled trip when every time you start your sled you are hoping a kickback does not bust the starter.

Def a bad dealer. Even if out of "date" you would think they would provide this to you. Also yes a new flash is on the way and will be released to dealers when Yamaha has their service seminars or whatever sometime in oct I believe.

I contacted the Yamaha rep today. Said the flash service bulletin is good until Oct 15, 2015. She called the dealer that told me it was expired while I was on the phone. She then said I can call the dealer and who to ask for and schedule it to get done. Very helpful. I then asked about a possible service bulletin or recall to do re-flash again in month or 2. Said have no info at this time. Now got to decide whether to do or wait??

Wait wait wait on the reflash!
My 14 viper had horrible hot starting problems. It was always hard to start when hot and could be quite embarrasing at gas stations and restaraunts, but after a few trys it always started and never left me stranded
I sent it in for the flash update.
Now it starts better but has kicked back twice (bad) since the reflash.
To be honest i thought the hard start sucked untill i heard my first kickback. The sound made me sick to my stomach.
Knowing what i know now, ill take a hard start every day over the sickening sound of that kickback.

I agree. Flash fixed my buddies 7000 which was a terrible hot starter. I never got any codes like I did first year and I really like the extra 100 rpm they gave us. I do not like the stumbling idle or the fact that it seems MORE people are having kickbacks. I would wait knowing what I do now.

As I found out at the dealer when they did mine, the program was not happy doing two in a row without a reboot in between them as I said above. But who knows? As both mine are fine I really can't comment but from an opinion and I don't like to do that.

I guess we will find out if we get another flash if it is roll up or aggregate, but I hope they make it roll up so previous flash or lack of will make no difference

Not only the starter.. but the exhaust too. I've seen an exhaust explode under pressure from kickback, as well as being flooded from not starting in cold weather.

I was to the understanding, from my dealer.. that there is a new flash coming?

I don't get why it's working on some and not on others. All I know is after my re-flash I had a low end pop, kick back and poor throttle response. Another member here had the kick back and took out his starter (broke the casting), stripped the starter gear and all the chunks went into the stator and windings.

Was able to purchase a used 2014 original ECU and compare the difference between the 2014 and the Reflash (2015). Definitely noticeable "pop", kick back and slower mph on top end with the Reflash.

Ran the 2014 original ECU all year on asphalt now, no kickbacks, no popping and I am back over 110mph on most runs.
